Are there any actors or actresses, who appear in a supporting cast who you really rate and who may even persuade you to see a movie?

For me it would have to be Philip Seymour Hoffman whose name on the credits has convinced me to sit down to films I would not otherwise have bothered with. Also Benicio Del Toro although he seems to be taking more leading roles now...

Do you have any performers that I might be interested in concentrating more on?

Such an excellent question!!! Although I had to think there and people probably would have heard the rusty cogs turning! [Smile]

I will have to rate Janeane Garofalo as THE supporting actress! Janeane was in Now and Then, Romy & Michele's High School Reunion, Bye Bye Love and of course many others.

Another of my favourites is Brittany Murphy who played Daisy in Girl: Interrupted, and also has parts in David and Lisa, Clueless and Drop Dead Gorgeous.

Both actresses haven't been type cast which I find appealing as it means they CAN do other stuff.

My choice is Martin Balsam who was in "12 Angry Men", "Psycho" and many others.

For me it's got to be Steve Buscemi. I watched "Big Daddy" a couple of nights ago and whenever Steve was on the screen I was in fits of laughter. He's also the light relief in "Armageddon". Excellent, excellent man.

Joe Pesci - mainly because he's been the Supporting Actor in so many of my favourite films :- Raging Bull, JFK, Casino and my absolute favourite Goodfellas, for which he received an Oscar [Smile]

This is a good list going. I'd like to add Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman, who seem to have immaculate taste (and some sort of friendship with Steven Soderbergh, which never hurts).

I love Joe Pesci - I never think of him as a supporting actor as he just steals every scene!!

Another actor I thought of is Sam Rockwell who played Guy in Galaxy Quest. He's also been in Green Mile and Charlie's Angels.

Great actor.

One actor I really enjoy is Harvey Keitel . I would say he is of the same caliber as Robert Dinero. He actually played against Dinero in Taxi Driver as the pimp. He gave tour-de-force performances in Reservoir Dogs (also starring Steve Buscemi who was mentioned in this thread) and Bad Leutenant . A bit of trivia, Harveys' character in Reservoir Dogs "Mr. Black", also makes a short cameo in Pulp Fiction (both films directed and written by Quentin Tarrantino). City of Industry is also good.

One word of warning, most of his characters tend to be violent, and so are the films not too surprisingly.

I agree with you about Philip Seymour Hoffman. His work in
"Magnolia" was excellent and also "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
He was also in a movie with DeNiro and I cannot remember the name.

Hi Ette nice to see you in the Forums.
There are loads of examples but at the moment I think Rhys Ifans in Notting Hill deserves a mention, mainly because I have just watched the film. I think he is a wonderful actor at the best of times.

Joaquin Pheonix persuaded me to see 'Signs.' Such a wonderful job. River was so talented, also. Drugs are such a demon.

A very, very, fine character actor I have always admired is David Strathairn.

http://us.imdb.com/Name?Strathairn,+David

He's appeared in a great many films and has had a special sort of collaboration with John Sayles. He's one of those solid actors who seems to work constantly. Lately he's been closing in on leading-man status and I really hope he achieves the prominance he deserves. He's such a fine, understated actor with a great talent for revealing the truth of a character and the skill to play a wide range of roles.

I admire him enormously. His name on a cast list makes it a film I want to see.

My favourite supporting actors are Steve Buscemi and William H. Macy. Their names are like a guarantee that the movie is worth watching.

Boosch, I agree with you on Harvey Keitel. He's one of my favorite actors. I can't remember him ever putting in a performance that wasn't really excellent.

Another character actor that I will go see just to see his performance is Christopher Walken. He always pull it off. His Horseless Horseman made the film Sleep Hollow for me. Gave me nightmares, though.
