I was always taught to wear your watch on your left hand, I was never told why, but I see some people wear it on their right. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is some kind of watch protocol, or why the left is where the watch is normally worn.

This isn't a suitable topic for this forum but I will answer your question.

Most people wear a watch on their left wrist as they are right handed and the watch is less likely to either get in the way or be damaged. Those who wear a watch on their right wrist are normally left handed.

I see, and sorry for putting it in the wrong place, I didn't realize.

I guess I am an exception to that rule, as I am left-handed, and I wear my watch on my left wrist. I tried it on my right wrist, and it feels weird to me.

When I was a teenager I wore my watch on my right wrist - because everyone else wore theirs on their left. Today I wear mine on my left wrist, it is more comfortable.

A right handed person is also able to wind up a watch whilst wearing it if it is on the left wrist.

Does anyone still DO that? Maybe adjust the hands, yes.

I'm left handed as well and also wear my watch on my left wrist. Like Dave says, wearing it on my right wrist feels weird and uncomfortable.

I am right handed, wear my watch on my left side, but I will wear the watch-face on the inside of my wrist. I started this years ago when a former boss would get mad if we looked at our watches during meetings. By wearing the face on the inside of the wrist, I could look at my watch and not have him notice.

My mum always did that, said it was less likely to get scratched.

I don't wear a watch anymore. I use my cell phone to check the time. I find that there are so many places to check the time, in the car, my cell phone, my palm (handheld computer), shops etc. I kept knocking my watch or scratching it or even hooking it in my shopping bags so it was just getting in the way. My children, however, still wear watches. They tell me they can't get through the school day without one.
But I definately would wear it on the left side.

I would not be without my watch, as it does not only tell me the time. Our Octopus system here enables us to shop , and use every method of transport with the use of a card. My watch can be used in the same way , it is an Octopus watch, I just lower the face of it onto the entry pad at any station or on any bus.So useful.

Wow. That sounds so cool Ren. That would really be easier than carrying a bag full of gadgets around. Our public transport system isn't that organised. Most of us drive everywhere. You risk being raped or mugged if you use the trains and if you take a taxi you are taking your life in your own hands.
Maybe one day we'll have such a cool system here. Maybe that would cut down on crime.

Yes it is cool! Many people still drive, but you can
even pay your carpark with Octopus. I suppose it does make life safer.
I have known whole days when I didnt open my purse the whole time;just used my watch!

I've alway wore my watch on my left wrist. I think it's because of the right handed, left handed thing, though I know some people are exceptions. I'd never be able to hold a phone, or drink coffee and check the time at the same time if I didn't wear the watch on my left wrist.

And Ren, does your watch have a laser and a bomb in it. Because that would totally be cool!!

But seriously, this Octopus thing that you speak of sounds pretty impressive. It could come in very handy for me seing as right now my wallet is nowhere to be found, and all my cards and bus passes are in it

There you go. All you have to remember is to wear your watch. I have left my purse at home several times and managed to go all day without needing cash. Lunch(fast food places take it), travel and supermarkets all included. The day I forgot my watch was a bit of a disaster though.

Ren, do you have to put money in it somehow? Is it like a topping up you cell phone with air time. Do you put money on it once a month or something?
I don't know how to word this without seeming dumb but do you run out of credit or points?
When my husband went to Singapore, on a business trip in 2002, he said he had a card that he would use for transport and had to be topped up with money every so often. Does the watch work the same way?

Yes . Quite right. I take it to the station ticket office, or any branch of 7/11 and can put any amount on it that I wish. I usually put enough for my travel to work for a week, but could put more. With Octopus Card, I think people are wary of putting a huge amount of money on it , in case it is lost or stolen. 7/11 is a useful option as they are open many hours.

That sounds really cool. I wouldn't mind one of them, instead of having to dig around in my school bag for my wallet. Are they waterproof though, because you would be in a bit of trouble if it rained...
