My confession is that I don't mind a bit of Clive Cussler occasionally!

His main character, Dirk Pitt, exceeds the greatest escape artists in history. I just love the improbable positions this NUMA guy gets himself into, only to extricate himself to live for another adventure.

I'm reading an old one at the moment, Shock Wave. Are there any other Clive Cussler/Dirk Pitt fans here?

I've read all of them Dreamweave. I just love the way he ties the past into the present. I'm checking at the library all the time to see if a new one is in print.

Yeah, Dreamer, I got hooked on ol' Dirk many years ago when I picked up "Raise the Titanic." Fascinating character; led me to devour all of Cussler's other adventure stories. Incredible imagination with solid characters. James Bond's got nothing on Pitt. Pitt can out-Bond ol' 007 any day. Real enjoyable escapism.

You know, I would swear on anything Clive Cussler/Dirk Pitt said. He does tremendous research into his subjects.

Also like the way Clive always appears in his own books as some character .. have you noticed a reference to CC in every book?

You beat me to the punch Dreamweave I was just going to mention how Cussler always manages to insert himself into the story somehow.
Kind of neat isn't it. Another author Allistaire Mclean always put a sentence or word into all his books that identified himself as a Freemason. Pretty slick.

I'm a big fan of Cussler too. How he manages to make a man whose name is Dirk Pitt seem cool is amazing. I also love his relationship with Al and Sandecker - operation stogie is a classic example.

Yes, Dreamer, I see Clive making his cameo appearances on paper, same as Hitchcock always snuck one into his movies. Cussler's bio says he's done much of what he writes about. Ya think? It was that way with James Bond's author, Ian Fleming. Fleming actually was an intelligence officer; suppose Cussler's chewed some of the same dirt as his hero, Pitt? Think he's dramatizing a bit? Do we really want to know, or leave well enough alone?

I've read about 4 Dirk Pitt adventures, I believe there's heaps more. Pretty cool stories, and your right, Clive does put a bit of research into the possibles and probables which always makes for a better read with me.

Has anyone tried to count how many times he's been shot and stabbed? I've read 4 books and if I recall correctly he would have 5 bullet scars from those 4 stories. At this rate, say there is 12 Dirk adventures total, he would have been shot 15 times!

I guess it's good to be a legend of fiction

Jack Ryan from the Tom Clancy books is my Man For All Seasons. He hasn't been shot as many times as Dirk though and doesn't get the women, but a fine bloke none the less

Well, just for the record...blue and I LOVE Dirk Pitt. The saddest literary thing that happened last year was that he changed his main character! I can't even remember the new fella's name...that's how impressed I was with that turn of events! I've read about 6 of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels, and I still have quite a few to go!
