Here is a subject close to my heart! Have any of you people read any Australian Authors? If not here is a book I consider to be a must read for people who like reading historical novels:- BENEATH THE SOUTHERN CROSS by JUDY NUNN. this book is a very good story following the lives of a family over 200yrs,in Sydney, Australia. It is a historically correct novel which begins in England in 1788, with a young man comiting a crime and being transported to sydney for his crime and starts a dynasty still continuing today. ------------------ dragonsaver

Since I moved to Australia I've read a lot of Australian authors. I read Schindler's Ark when I was at college in the UK. My favourite Australian author is Sara Douglass. I've read the Battleaxe series, the Wayfairer Redemption series and Threshold. Her work is brilliant - a combination of fantasy and (sort of) sci-fi. I just love her stuff and would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy!! Blessings MeKare ------------------ Man's love is of a man's life a thing apart, 'tis woman's whole existence ~Lord Byron~

I love Australia, Dragonsaver, I think it's a great country (despite the creepy-crawlies)! I hope your experiences didn't put you off us Poms for life (we're not ALL bad y'know ;P) I'm in Brisbane Queensland - I love this state *G* - I'm not used to being able to drive half an hour out of a city and be in the middle of a national park! Which is wierd, since Australia is so huge and the UK is so small. Wonder why that is? Nope, I haven't been outside Queensland yet, but I have travelled up from Brissy to Gladstone by bus (with the band my husband was in at the time)! Hopefully I'll get to see more of Australia soon Blessings MeKare ------------------ "Four be the things I'd been better without Love, curiosity, freckles and doubt" ~Dorothy Parker~

Hi Cohalen Hmmm ... I haven't read any Shute yet - should look him up at the library.
I can't stand Cadfael (Shrewsbury is turning into a Cadfael theme park, I tried to read one of the books and it bored me silly!!) My husband was with a band called Dogmachine at the time. I don't think they've released their album in the US, but they toured with Atari Teenage Riot 2 years ago. Please, MeKare! Give Cadfael another chance (two actually, sorta). I grew up near Anaheim, CA. (Where Disneyland is) so I know what uberhype for a local attraction can do to one's perspective. (Many people who've lived in Anaheim all their lives have never gone to Disneyland while people from around the globe save for years to get there...enough about The Magic Kingdom.) Anyway here are two great ways to experenct the wonders of Cadfael. 1) Books on tape (many read by the great Derek Jacobi) and 2) The BBC Videos featuring the same,Derek Jacobi! If you still cant' get into it then...then I guess it's not your thing. Did you ever like "The Name of the Rose"? Very similar. Is your husbands bands music on the web? (MP3? Real Audio?) Cheers! ------------------ "What is life, without a little Spice".

Hi again Cohalen OK back to Cadfael
I've heard the Derek Jacobi tapes, and love his voice and acting but still can't stand Ellis Peters' writing! And the BBC series is a VERY sore point. They filmed somewhere in Eastern Europe WHEN SHREWSBURY ABBEY IS STILL 99% standing! Why not, in these days of electronic imaging, make a composite of the Abbey and the missing part, hiding the main road that now goes through the Abbey grounds? I've seen some of Name of the Rose the movie and REALLY want to read the book, just haven't found it at the library yet! My hubby actually just took the Dogmachine link off our homepage! He left the band after the ATR tour and in now working on his own music, none of which is ready for public consumption yet *G*. If you search, you SHOULD be able to find the Dogmachine homepage ... it's heavy Industrial music (warning for those of sensitive ears *G*) Blessings MeKs ------------------ "Four be the things I'd been better without Love, curiosity, freckles and doubt" ~Dorothy Parker~

Have you guys ever read anything by A.B.Paterson, Norman Lindsay, or Arthur Upfield? The first 2 were native aussies; Upfield was an English emigre. I have 2 books of Paterson's poems; he's best known for the words to that famous song,"Waltzing Matilda". Lindsay is renowned for his very erotic and controversial artwork, but he was also an author; I own a copy of his novel, "Age of Consent", which Michael Powell made a movie of in 1969. And I've 8 mysteries by Upfield, all about his aborigine detective, Napoleon "Bony" Bonaparte. ------------------ Terry Bigham

Hi tjoe I've read some of "Banjo" Patterson's work, and seen a televised reading/performing of some of his poems. I've never read any Lindsay or Upfield, but I remember the tv series of "Boney" when I was a child. Blessings

There are so many terrific Australian authors - one of my favourites is Marian Halligan - try The Golden Dress or Lover's Knots. I've also just finished a great book by Maureen McCarthy called Chain of Hearts. You could also try Helen Garner and Stephanie Dowrick.
