What is your favorite song of all time?
Mine would probably have to be "Stairway To Heaven by "Led Zeppelin.

That's a really hard one. I have several favourites.
"Don't Cry Out Loud" I think it's by Peter Allen, correct me if I'm wrong
"Holy Grail" Hunters and Collectors
and "Forever Young" apparently by someone else but the only version I know is the Youth Group one. It is really beautiful.

My fav song is "Somewhere in the Night" by Mack Gordon and Josef Myrow, from the 1946 movie musical "Three Little Girls in Blue". It was used as the theme of the 50's TV series "Naked City", and Carly Simon gave a soulful rendition of it on her "Film Noir" CD.

Other faves of mine include the Carmichael-Parrish classic "Star Dust", the Monk-Williams-Haenigan standard "Round Midnight", Ellington's "Azure" and "Sophisticated Lady", The Beatles' "Ticket to Ride", the Zombies' "Tell Her No" and the Steely Dan rocker "Josie".

Way too many to list, without taking up a whole lot of space.

For me, it depends upon what mood I'm in.

I'm a huge Billy Joel fan, Phil Collins fan, Crowded House fan, Robert Palmer fan, Suzanne Vega fan, and 80's music fan. How do I choose some favourites from all those, let alone the others that I really enjoy?

Off the top of my head, here are a few (!) favourites:

"Sugar Walls" - Sheena Easton
"Blood Makes Noise" - Suzanne Vega
"99.9F" - Suzanne Vega
"Into Temptation" - Crowded House
"World Where You Live" - Crowded House
"Better Be Home Soon" - Crowded House
"Shoop Shoop Diddy Wop" - Monte Video
"Safety Dance" - Men Without Hats
"Johnny Be Good" - Men At Work
"Downunder" - Men At Work
"If You Leave Me" - Mental As Anything
"The Nips Are Getting Bigger" - Mental As Anything
"Mexican Radio" - Wall of Voodoo

I could go on, and on, and on. But I won't.

There are a lot of songs that I can list as favorite, but most are "favorite at the moment". The ones that have been on my fave list the longest:

Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
Don't Speak by No Doubt

For work at the moment I'm adding Voltaires' "The Last Word".

I've always had in my head my top 5:

1. Space Oddity - David Bowie
2. Angie - Rolling Stones
3. Wildflower - Skylark
4. Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
5. Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues

But this only includes my really old favorites. I'd also add a whole bunch more Bowie songs, Tracy Chapman's first album and a lot of Bruce Springsteen. Newer favorites would include:

"Someday You Will Be Loved" and "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab For Cutie, Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt", Brett Dennen's "Ain't No Reason." Many many more.

Toughie.

I think there are two different songs called that, aren't there?

The Alphaville "Forever Young"= "Forever young, I want to be forever young. Do you really want to live forever...." The Bob Dylan song (covered by Joan Baez and a million other people) goes:

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
(etc)

Which "Forever Young" does Youth Group sing? I like both of these, but have a special place in my heart for the Alphaville one.

Y

Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan

Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones (along with darn near everything they've done)

Badlands - Bruce Springsteen (again, along with darn near everything he's ever done)

Tenth Avenue Freeze Out - Bruce Springsteen (special mention, as it's my FunTrivia theme song)

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix

Tomorrow Wendy - Concrete Blonde

Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover - Sophie B. Hawkins

New York State of Mind - Billy Joel

Your Latest Trick - Dire Straits

Thrash Unreal - Against Me

I Just Want to Make Love to You - Muddy Waters

Romeo Had Juliet - Lou Reed (along with...well, you know the drill by now, but it cannot be overemphasized that Lou should be President of the United States by now)

The Sick Bed of Cúchulaínn - The Pogues (as above - but I wouldn't trust Shane with my car let alone my country)

One - U2

Stormy Monday - Lowell Fulson

Travelling Riverside Blues - Robert Johnson (along with every last one of the other 28, except maybe "Hot Tamales")

Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel

Lucretia My Reflection - The Sisters of Mercy

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (Hell, yeah!)

I Don't Like Mondays - The Boomtown Rats

Troy - Sinead O'Connor

Hurt - Johnny Cash

Tell Me Ma - Gaelic Storm

This are just "songs with words" - rock, pop, blues. If we get into jazz, classical, or experimental music...oy, veh.
