I also consider 'We Built This City' to be the worst song of all time. 'Playground In My Mind' and 'Lovin' You' by Minnie Ripperton, along with anything by the Spice Girls, are also candidates for the title.

Could you possibly be talking about Holiday by Green Day, because that seems to fit the requirements.
I must add this to my list - does anyone remember "I'm just a Teenage Dirtbag (baby)"
I used to hate that song, and yet it was played everywhere.
When it was released I was only a little tacker, so I didn't completely understand the lyrics, but I got the drift.

I like "Holiday" by Green Day but I'm not that big on their new stuff actually. I was talking more about songs like "Showdown/E.P." by Propagandhi.
"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus...I used to hate that song when it came out, too but then like a year ago I heard it again and I loved it and now I have their album on my ipod.

Yes that's been mentioned many times, actually and taht's probably the most horrible display of lyrics I've ever heard in my life...it's just ridiculous!

I got hammered for my last post when I stated that the lyrics where important to me - I think I may have been misunderstood. I know what music is - in the words of Big Audio Dynamite, it's "Rhythm and Melody".
I guess I don't like a catchy song (or popular song) if the lyrics are garbage, but that doesn't define what I like in toto. Yes, it has to have some form of appeal - be it the melody, the lyrics, or the fact that it amuses me when I'm drunk (I'm always listening to "Billy Don't Be a Hero" by Paper Lace when I'm drinking simply because it amuses the heck out of me). That's probably why I don't just listen to poetry.
I like an awful lot of instrumental pieces of music (I'm a huge "Art of Noise" fan), I just think that if people are going to bother singing, say something that at least makes sense, or isn't offensive. Otherwise, why bother? It's just useless noise that detracts from what may well be quality "music".

I agree, lyrics are important to me as well. A catchy song with crap lyrics just won't win me over, no matter how lovely the melody. OK, that isn't true. I have some Richard Marx and Bryan Adams sheet music at home, but that's because it's pretty piano... I don't sing along. I have a friend who hates We Built this City so much that it gets stuck in his brain at the slightest provocation and drives him batty until he can get it back out again. I'd have to say that I think Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins is one of the worst songs ever. Geesh, you wanna talk about whiney... No one holds a candle to Billy Corgan for whining. I know plenty of people who think that Smashing Pumpkins in general and Disarm in particular are epic somehow, but I just don't see it. They irritate me. I think the lyrics are trite and overworked, the voice is disgusting and I'm not all that impressed by the music. But maybe that's just the worst song out of my favorite genre. Probably if I had to pick a worst song of all time, it'd be on the country lists.

A lot of the songs I really hate are a lot of those "touchy-feely" songs of the 70's, such as "Feelings", "Torn Between Two Lovers", "Alone Again, Naturally" and "Seasons In The Sun", not to mention practically everything by those Carpenters (and a lot of ABBA)! They're so freaking saccharine they set my teeth on edge!

Bad songs? From my earliest days (a fair while ago now) I could not stand the dirge like crap of the Blues...'My mama done told me' and 'My paw done gone and left us in de misery' etc. Self indulgent and self pitying garbage played on a guitar by an invariably vastly overwieght gentleman with fists like boar hams. Coupled with that, the good ol' boys of country and western, 'My mamy died in a train crash, my foot was cut off by a saw, my daddy never loved me and that is why I'm a whore' etc etc, ad infinitum. Oh...spare me! Someone said earlier, that, to them, lyrics are not important to a tune. I agree. Music can raise the spirit, recall a mood and time in the past, or just quite simply move the human heart. The human voice, when used as instrument can be a wonderful thing. But in message delivery mode it simply spoils a good tune.

If we are thinking about the same song, it is 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol.

Well... a can list whole genres here... bands too. Anything that's all "true love, blah, blah, blah" I cannot stand. The only english lyrics I like are Marilyn Manson's, because they're so hilarious... and ironic, too, considering our current situation... Most of the music I listen to is Polish, and I have to agree - the lyrics are nowhere as important as the beat. That's why I listen to music where the lyrics add to the beat, not detract from it!

I have so many really bad songs that I'm trying hard to forget ,but one I heard lately was just truly awful (IMO) .It's by the band Gnarls Barkley (rubbish name in itself) & is called 'Run' .I can't think of one good thing about it (except that it's fairly short ) . I won't even post a link to it as I cannot bring myself to inflict it on anyone who has been fortunate enough to have avoided it so far !

It's catchy, I love the tune, but stop and google search for the lyrics and you'll see what I'm talking about. I can't post them here because they aren't suitable.
I Googled the lyrics and found only one line that would be inappropriate.
My choice would be Cradle of Filth's cover of Iron Maiden's "Hallowed be Thy Name." They butchered a classic.
