Lioness has mentioned some good ones, so I won't repeat them but add a few others. The Giver by Lois Lowry, very interesting and thought-provoking book. Galax-arena by Gillian Rubinstein, strange but so well-written... there's also a sequel, Terra-farma. The Gathering, Greylands, Scatterlings, Alyzon Whitestarr, Legendsong saga, Obernewtyn chronicles- all by Isobelle Carmody. She's just a wonderful author. Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon Across the Nightingale Floor which is the first of the Otori series by Lian Hearn. I adore these books. It's set in Japan, many centuries ago, and has lots of culture, history and battles etched throughout. This would suit older teens. His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. (I now know how you keep thinking of more, Lioness )

For "girly" teens, Jacqueline Wilson's books aimed at the older reader, rather than the ones for youngsters - The Illustrated Mum is good, and Dustbin Baby. Susan Cooper is good too, The Dark Is Rising sequence is a twist on the Arthurian Legends, and her others are all good. It depends on the teen though, some want "modern" stuff and others will read the 'classics' Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc

I think that Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is a great book for teenagers. It's a fantasy book and a great one at that. Teens should really check this one out.

I've thought of more, and I can't believe I forgot it the first time!!!
ANYTHING by Terry Pratchett, he has a sense of humour for the weird, but the books, while they don't follow a very deep storyline, are fall-out-of-your-seat funny, and my friends and I absolutely love quoting him.
"light a man a fire and he is warm for a day, set him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life." - Jingo?
"I meant," said Ipslore bitterly, "what is there in this world that truly makes living worthwhile?" Death thought about it. "CATS," he said eventually. "CATS ARE NICE." - Sourcery

A great book for teens to read would be "Go Ask Alice". It is so very good. I read it a few years ago because it was on a list of required reading for the high school. One of the ladies I worked with had a son in the 11th grade. She showed me the list and that was one I didn't not recognize. So I picked it up and read it in one sitting. It is a great book and so very sad.

Michael Morpurgo and Anne Fine for younger teens too. My Form ones and twos loved Kensuke's Kingdom ( by the former)

Here are a few series that I like:
The Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffery. (fantasy/sci-fi)
The Honor Harrington series by David Weber. (military sci-fi, for older teens)
The Oath of Swords series by David Weber (epic fantasy, very swords and sorcery)
The Redwall series by Brian Jaques (fantasy mostly for younger teens but some of the battles get pretty grisly)
Thats all I can think of, but more later.

Hi, 17yr old female recommending Caroline Lawrence's roman mystery series for teens who are into history. I've heard of a similar series by another author set in Ancient Egyptian times but haven't read them yet. Also, any of the classics.

I find it interesting that most of the books in this thread seem to be sci-fi, fantasy, or historical fiction.
For something a little more contemporary I highly recommend Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas*. It's probably not suitable for the under-16's, but it's a great book about teens, for teens and young adults (I read it at 25 and really enjoyed it).
* Rob Thomas the creator of Veronica Mars, not Rob Thomas the Matchbox 20 singer.

I thought this was a great book when I was about 12 or 13. Coming of age story dealing with surfing and art as the main backdrops:
The Impact Zone by Ray Maloney
edit: some themes in this book ARE for the more mature or at least more precocious. More PG-13 than G. A very good book, though. Well worth reading but maybe more for males than females.

ok, about the Tamora pierce books. I am a teen, and have read most of her books. She used to be my favorite author, and her first few series are great, I loved the Alanna series and Wild Magic. I mean no offense lioness, but her latest books were very racy. If you are parents looking for good books for your child, or a teen looking for a good book to read, I would like you to know that one of the main characters in The Will of the Empress is lesbian, and in one scene passionately kisses another girl. It is disgusting and needless to say I will never read any more of her books. Also, one of her books goes into a little too much detail about sex.

I agree with many people on here; I love fantasy, and have read the Sabriel series, it was great! I would also suggest the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe, if teens haven't read that at a younger age. good fantasy authors for young teens are erin hunter, Christopher paolini, J.R. tolkein (of course, classic!), J.K. rowling (another of course) the bartimeus trilogy, which unfortunately i cannot remember the author, kathryn lasky (althought I recommend her for 13 and younger, I've started to lose interest in her books, she's still writing them) and cornelia funke.

I wouldn't call them racy. They had a few jokes in them that were sex-related, and younger teens may not understand (though knowing the younger teens I know, they would), older more mature teens would just laugh, or smile.
I know that one of the characters in Will of the Empress is a lesbian, and I find nothing wrong with it. Most people I know that have read it have no problem either. It didn't exactly go into much detail involving the kiss either.
and about the book going into a bit too much detail about sex, I think that was one of the Aly series wasn't it? All I can say is that I've read books with more detail than that, and the new Beka Cooper book is much less racy. It's well worth a read.

the Friends and Enemies series by David Field. I just finished reading the 2nd book in the series (Beings in a Dream). The books are about a 15 year old named Tommy who is vacationing in France with his family when he goes back in time 400 years (but takes his cell with him). He meets Eloise and falls in love and the two of them have adventure after adventure as they try to escape/defeat the evil Drogo (he is a great antagonist). In the 2nd book, the characters return to the present time, which leads Eloise through some seriously funny culture shock! The books are fast-moving and witty.

S E Hinton - 'The Outsiders', 'That was Then and This is Now' and 'Rumblefish'. What about some older stuff - the 'Jennings' books by Anthony Buckeridge? Still roll-around floor funny to me.
