For girls, I think the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants series is really good. (Ann Brashares)

Come to think of it, I'd also recommend the Conan books written by Robert E. Howard. Action-packed and very well written too. I still drag those books out from time to time. There are some great stories in there.

When I was 18 I got heavily into the old "John Carter of Mars" series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. They were very cheesey and very un-PC, but fun.

One really good book for all horse loving freaks(like me) is "I rode a horse of milk white jade." I can't recall the author though. Anything by JRR Tolkein is great. Girl teens would like the Anne Shirly series and little women. The Shadow spinner is an awesome book too. though maybe a little juvenile, but Gail Carlson Levine is a wonderful author. anything of hers is wonderful. The illiad is a good one too. But some of the greatest books that I have read are the ones I pick out of random

I sooo second your vote for "I rode a horse of milk white jade" even though I'm not a horse nut like my cousins.

I think that the Pendragon Serise is good for most ages, and The Lightning thief serise for younger ones. For girly teens that like romance probably the Twilight serise. I've never read them, but girls that never read at my school are finishing the 400 page books in a matter of a couple weeks.

Ooh, I love any book by David Eddings, he's a must read if you're into fantasy fiction. James Patterson's 'Maximum Ride' series is very good, I really enjoyed that. At the moment I'm reading 'Les Miserables', it's very good, I'd reccomend it to anyone!

I have to recommend the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Most of the girls at my school seem to like them. Although I am a boy I really enjoyed them too. It had a very good story line. Check it out if you have time. Its a pretty good read.

Some of the books I enjoyed reading as a teenager (or believe would be enjoyable for a teenager, that I read now) are: Fiction: 1. Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging (British writer, in the form of a diary, very funny, some sexual content) 2. The Life of Pie (religious fiction without an allegory, well anything more would give away the story) 3. Salamander (odd story about book binding) 4. The Hatchet (or its sequel The River) (about a teen who gets lost in the Canadian wilderness) 5. Wicked, or anything by Gregory Maguire (modernized fairytales, some sexual content) 6. The Princess Diaries(like the movie)
Science-Fiction 1. Harry Potter series(I probably don't need to describe this) 2. The Giver (about a world where people cannot feel emotions, see color or really think for themselves, and one boy who does) 3. The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy(again, like the movie, tv shows, or radio shows) 4. Anything by Michael Crighton (putting a little more science in science fiction, still fiction though)
Detective-fiction 1. The Hannibal series (Thomas Harris) 2. 24/7 by Dale Brown (a cross between survivor and speed, very thrilling) 3. Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons

Ahhh. I haven't read Disclosure, and have a tendency to forget details in his books as they are filled with them, LOL.

I am now recommending The Golden Compass as well. Lol,yes, I jumped on the bandwagon, but there was a bandwagon for a reason, and the book is engaging, exciting, and very well written.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is great, and hilarious.
And Laurie Halse Anderson has written some good books, although some of the content is for mature teens, like in Speak.
This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen is an amazing book, as well.

It probably depends on the teen. I stuck to BCS for quite a while (never read all of them though). Historical fiction I'd go for the Pagan Series Sci-fi-I agree with the Galax Arena one. I read this while in hospital at 11 and it was good didn't know about the sequel though have to check it out Fantasy-Probably most of the one's already here my brother (loves fantasy) has read a few and the Sabriel series is really good. The Narnia Series is as well. Just a note if you want to start at the beginning of the series the first book is The Magician's Nephew, Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe is the best known but the second. Others I'd suggest are Cage of Butterflies (about a bunch of teen geniuses at a farm and a group of younger geniuses who have telepathic powers I'd probably go for some of the classics as well though including Oliver Twist (Oliver but with more detail) Pride and Predjudice Pollyanna (an orphan gets sent to live with her rich aunt who is the lead citezen of the town) A few newer ones would be Boy (Roahl Dahl bio, childhood part) Machine Gunners (set in WW 2 about a group of kids in suburban England)
There's a couple that were written by the families of victims of the Columbine Shooting about their daughters but I can't remember the titles at the moment

Kim Antieau is a great writer. Try Mercy, UnBOund or BRoken Moon or a new one coming out called Ruby, Imagine.
Mercy Unbound is about a girl who begins to believe she is growing angel wings after a loved one dies. Since angels don't need to eat, the girl stops eating. When her parents send her to a hospital for girls with eating disorders, Mercy begins to wonder if she's really becoming an angel. Is she or isn't she?
It's very real. THe characters are compelling. I cried at this one.

I love anything by Melina Marchetta although she is rarely known outside of Australia as I've found. Her stories always revolve around teenage women in Australia from a Italian family. Usually they deal with the racism and cultural differences experienced by these girls. I know that sounds boring but their very entertaining. If you want to preview one of her books before reading it they made a movie of her first book, "Looking for Alibrandi" staring Pia Miranda and Anthony LaPaglia. She has 3 books out that I know of. Her books that have been published are "Looking for Alibrandi", "Saving Francesca" and "On the Jellico Road" the last of which I haven't read yet but is sitting by my bed at home ready to go.
Another author who has great books aimed at teens is Meg Cabot and I'm not just talking about "The Princess Diaries" I loved her series "The Mediator" and novel "Jinx".
I also love Anne Rice novels which are about Vampires. Another good Vampire series is "The Vampire Diaries" by Liz Smith (L.J. Smith as she sometimes is credited). I have just found out that another one is about to be released. She also wrote a series called Nightworld as well as 3 trilogies. I really got into L.J.Smith at high school and read all the copies that my school had.
For younger teens I'd really reccomend anything by Sally Odgers an Australian author. I really enjoyed her novel "Candleiron". She primarily Fantasy. I think she also happens to be a member here at funtriva but I could be wrong.
