On my list of Great Overlooked Movies would be:

One of John Wayne's most overlooked films, "Hondo", directed by John Farrow, from the Louis L'Amour novel (made in 3-D, but don't count that against it!).

"Destiny" an early silent fantasy from Fritz Lang, about a woman trying to reclaim her lover from Death.

"Escape From Alcatraz" a fact-based Don Siegel prison flick starring Clint Eastwood, as well as his earlier prison opus "Riot in Cell Block 11" and John Cromwell's powerful "Caged" about women prisoners.

Dick Powell's "The Enemy Below" about the cat-and-mouse between an American battleship and Nazi sub in WW2; it stands with "Das Boot".

A lot of Sam Fuller films, especially "The Naked Kiss", "Fixed Bayonets" and one of the all-time Overlooked Westerns "Run of the Arrow".

One that comes to mind immediately for me would be "Happy Accidents" starring Vincent D'Onofrio and Marisa Tomei. This came out when I lived overseas so I never heard of it and when I came accross it last year in a rental store I took it home. I liked it so much I bought it! I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of time-travel movies.

Oh, that is such a great movie. It explores so many of life's questions and emotions, but it is never maudlin and has such a great cast (Sandra Bulllock, Ellen Burstyn, Maggie Smith, Finnoula Flanagan, Ashley Judd). So many funny lines, too.

Daughter even did a presentation on it for her English course.

"The 13th Warrior". I saw that it was such a disappointment to Omar Sharif that he actually considered stopping acting. I have seen it so many times that I run it through my head at work.
I've only come across 1 other person that could quote from it.

That would be me, right? The 13th Warrior is one of my favorites even if I did forget to put it on this list.

I believe what they have in common is Mark Knopfler. Local Hero is one of my favorite movies to recommend to my friends. I also recommend:
The Commitments
The Big Lebowski
The History Boys
Bedazzled(Peter Cook/Dudley Moore version)
and Enter Laughing

Love "Boondock Saints". Anything of that fashion is good after a bad day.

My favorite overlooked films would be:

A Patch of Blue (Shelley Winters plays the ultimate harridan)

"The World, the Flesh and the Devil" (end of the world tale with Harry Belafonte, Inger Stevens and Mel Ferrar)

and "We're No Angels" with Humphrey Bogart and Aldo Ray (delightful comedy)

Aiden Quinn is one of my favorite actors. He has played in quite a few movies but three of my favorites which I haven't heard anyone else talk about:

Stolen Summer - 2002
Songcatcher - 2000
Benny & Joon - 1993

Would love to know if any of you have seen and also like these movies?

Yeah, 'Benny and Joon' is good. It's almost as fine as Depp's 'Gilbert Grape' -but not so intense.
Edited to add: 'The Songcatcher' is a wonderful movie. It's very odd, with a low key script, like Holly Hunter's 'The Piano.' -another favourite of mine.

The great Robert Duvall directed and starred in a film called "The Apostle." It was a terrific movie, with an Oscar-nominated performance by Duvall, and Farrah Fawcett and Billy Bob Thornton co-starring. I just happened to stumble across it on television. It's really worth seeing, Robert Duvall is amazing.

'The Apostle' is a very good film; true to life though it was [this turned it into a minus for some people. A bit too close to home in the way of subject matter, maybe] Certainly an interesting close up look at the type of personality it takes to be a televangelist or other bigger than life personality. Duvall was perfect in the title role.

I haven't seen 'The Apostle.' When was it filmed? Would like to see it. Another favorite of mine is Helen Hunt in "The Good Woman." I like her in other movies, but this is by far my favorite.

Tea with Mussolini
Ladies in Lavender
The Shipping News (a bit dour)

all brilliant acting performances from Judi Dench (and Kevin Spacey in Shipping News)...

If you can stand the sub-titles, both Jean de Florette and Manon les Sources are absolutely brilliant : the twist at the end is a shock!

Anybody ever see One from the Heart, from 1981 or 1982 (somewhere in that period)? It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola - and nearly set him forever into bankruptcy, it was said. I really liked it, though - quirky and different and very original. The music was terrific, too, I remember. About a couple in Las Vegas who decide to split for a while and each meets their "ideal/fantasy" partners while they try going their separate ways. Or do they? Odd little movie, but the kind of thing that sticks with me and appeals to my occasionally weird taste(s) in cinema. Terri Garr and Frederic Forrest (and Raul Julia, too, I think) were in it ...

I'd like to add Black Snake Moan here. Really remarkable movie; Christina Ricci deserved and Oscar playing a woman with a disabling compulsion. It gets really bizarre, but with a real sense of compassion and overriding decency. Also features a great version of "Stagger Lee" - which was especially interesting to me since I'd just read a book on the history of the song/toast.
