I absolutely love Avril Lavigne and her songs. I liked her old style from her earlier days and I like her newer style even more. Her songs are so deep and she has a fantastic voice. What are all of your opinions on this Canadian pop-rocker?

I like Avril. I think she's pretty talented. My favorite song by her is "Nobody's Home".

She's ok, I like her later songs better, but not really "Girlfriend" that much.

My favourite would probably also be "Nobody's Home"

I think my favorite is actually "Girlfriend" or ...actually I can't pick a favorite off of her new album...I think her whole new album is my favorite lol.

And have you heard the Rubinoos song that they're saying she copied "Girlfriend" from and it sounds nothing like her song

I can't say I'm mad about her. I reckon that the only good songs she had were off her first two albums (and even those were few a far between,) but aside from that, not much. When she came to SA a few years ago, I went to her concert. As much as I hate to say it, the poor girl is delusional. She can't sing.

I also don't like the way that she was all in-your-face, wannabe hard rocker kind of thing to begin with, and has now completely changed. I think she's a real chameleon in terms of trying to fit in with what the public is demanding at the time.

Although, I will hand it to her. She does entertaining music videos.

All I'm saying is I don't think she copied that song. The songs are completely different...the Rubinoos song sounds like it should be the theme song of an 80's sitcom...the only similarities are "Hey hey You you" which if you want to get nitpicky was in a Rolling Stones song before BOTH of those songs came out...so why don't the Stones just sue them both! Because they are both OBVIOUSLY trying to copy off of the Stones!

Lavigne probably has never heard or heard of the Rubinoos. I mean, she admitted she never heard of the Clash, so come on. The song in question was covered by some Disney-wanna-be type band (The Party) in the early '90s and more than likely she heard that version and ripped it off.

The first twenty seconds or so of Avril's new song "I Don’t Have To Try" sounds exactly like Peaches' "I’m The Kinda" from a few years back.

Still, if she'd admit she lifted the tunes and settle the matter, that'd be fine. She swiped from some good artists and after all, George Harrison, Dylan, and several other major artists have on occasion lifted, stolen and copied from songs in their careers.

1) When You're Gone
2) Girlfriend
3) Sk8er Boi
4) Keep holding On
5) Compicated
6) My Happy Ending

What songs did she steal George Harrison and Dylan from? She did a cover of "Knocking on Heaven's Door" if that's what you're refering to for Dylan.

Also, if you listen to her song and the Peaches' song all the way through there's only the beginning of her song that sounds the same and there are plenty of songs with little excerpts like that from other songs and nobody picks them out.

Also that Rubinoos song sounds absolutely nothing like "Girlfriend"! The beat is completely different, the vocal melody is completely different, there is nothing in the verses that have anything to do with each other and the fact that like 4 words are similar in the chorus is the only thing that makes them even relate to each other at all!

I never said she stole from George Harrison or Dylan. I said "George Harrison, Dylan, and several other major artists have on occasion lifted, stolen and copied from songs in their careers."

The first twenty or so seconds of Lavigne's "I Don’t Have To Try" is lifted, stolen and copied from Peaches' "I’m The Kinda". Theft is theft and she should admit it. She probably didn't realize she was swiping the music, with so much music out there. But admit it and put it behind her. Other artists do steal excerpts or whatever. Some give credit where it's due and some don't. Avril is a high profile singer/celebrity and the crap's going to hit the fan harder for her than lesser known artists. That doesn't make it fair, I know, it only sets an example.

"Girlfriend" sounds more like The Party's version of the Rubinoos' song. But the chorus is a definite lift from the original. "Girlfriend" is a nice little song. Makes me nostalgic for a Rubinoos album though.

Oh...sorry I thought you said she stole from Harrison and Dylan.

Honestly everything's been done before, nothing's original. You give me any song and I'm sure I could come up with atleast 5 others with the same exact chord progression.

To me, the choruses of the Rubinoos song and "Girlfriend" don't sound anything alike except "hey hey you you" the vocal melodies are NOTHING alike!

If you ask me it sounds more like The Rubinoos are lifting from the chorus of "Get Off of My Cloud" from the Rolling Stones...but even that is a stretch!

Honestly it's futile to argue as people hear what they hear....you can't MAKE someone hear something. I just don't understand...am I the only one who has heard both songs and doesn't think they sound anything alike?! Am I just going crazy? It's not like I'm a loyal fan of Avril Lavigne...yeah I like her new album but it's not like my favorite album...not even close! I could honestly care less about Avril Lavigne getting sued but I just don't think she's guilty!

I think that Avril is such a great artist and I hope that she keeps singing even though she is married now to Derrick Whibley (or someone like that). I do not really picture her having kids for another couple of years, so I hope that she will come out with a few more albums.

Also, does anyone know why Avril's music style changed a lot from 2002 to the present day.

I really like Avril Lavigne. I think she has a lot of talent. Is there a musician, actor or anyone else out there who hasn't gone through a few changes?
Part of it is called, 'growing up'.

I don't listen to either Lavigne or Spears, but I do know who they are and I have seen Lavigne on the talk show circuit lately. I don't think comparing the two is totally fair. So far, Avril has shown to be a bit more responsible and level-headed.

I still like alot of Spears' songs...I don't own any albums or anything but they're pretty catchy...I don't really understand why people look at the people so much...I just like the music...I don't really care for Britney Spears as a person.

LOL, K. Just messin' with you.

I was surprised to see how many CDs Lavigne has sold. I really didn't hear much Avril until I started listening to the (mostly) 80s channel in the mornings - hey, they've got decent news and traffic, and the music's pretty listenable. I usually listen to college stations and their coterie - SOAD, RHCP, Evanescence, Trivium, more aggressive, dare I say more substantial stuff musically. I'd put Avril closer to Brit, Timberlake, or Christina Aguilara as far as musicianship goes than to folks that I usually listen to. Nothing wrong with that, of course - just a matter of taste.

And, for the record, you are all right about her personal life. She does seem to be staying out of the Paris/Brit/Amy Winehouse scene as far as self preservation goes, which is a good thing for everyone involved.

At first I didn't know who Amy Winehouse was but I know now she does the "Rehab" song...which is awesome...I love that song..I rock out to it all the time on the radio.

I'm a punk fan...I like Against Me!, Propagandhi, NOFX, Randy, Smoke or Fire...stuff like that but I like a litle bit of everything...I just prefer Punk Rock I think.
