I realised today that I have been in Hong Kong (not at the same address though,) for 30 years exactly on the 4th of August. I cannot see myself living anywhere else now. How long have you been in one place? I can't believe where 30 years went!

I hope you will be taking a cake into school to celebrate. Some time ago I was transferred to Jersey with my work, I told my employers that I would stay for six months then wanted a 'proper' overseas transfer. On 1st November I will have been here for thirty-five years.

I'm 37 now and I've lived in the same town all my life with no plans to move anywhere else.

I lived in my last flat, in East Ham in London, for 23½ years, which was a record. Having moved here to Hastings on the Channel coast, I don't intend to move again. If I want to break my previous record, I'll have to live into my eighty-third year. I'm not sure what my chances are, since the various "death clocks" on the web give very different forecasts.

I think you all are rather fortunate. I've lived all over the place and can never quite decide whether that's a good or bad thing. Here in the U.S. alone, I've lived in two cities in Ohio, two in Connecticut, then Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Princeton, NJ, and Chicago. I've also lived in Italy, in Rome and Parma.
It's been an adventurous and fascinating life so far, but I often envy people who have deep roots in one place and many friends and relatives there. Keeping in touch with my friends and family members requires a lot of time and attention. When you make a friend somewhere and then move, it's too easy to fall out of contact.

Ianfranco, only very seldom do I envy people who live in one place for really long periods of time. When I lived in Hawaii, I met neighbors who had never even been off the island of Oahu! How limiting is that!
As well as having lived in numerous places across the continental US, I've lived in Hawaii and southern Spain. Were it not for living in those places, I'd never have seen Maui, the big island of Hawaii, Morocco, Portugal, Italy and most all of Spain. It is a big world we live in and the more of it we see the more knowledgeable, experienced and "well rounded" we become.
I visited once my "home town" for a class reunion. I found people who have never, ever moved away, saw any other part of the country, or have seen the world. They are limited in their experiences, and their own little world consists of a 10 mile radius. How sad is that?
On the other hand, it's okay to live in one place (in my opinion) but it's a real necessity to get out, around, and see what there is in the rest of the world.
My only sadness comes when I think about the fact that there is no one left "at home" where I grew up. Just remember, "Home is where the heart is," not necessarily a place.

I've been in Oxfordshire since 1982. Before that I traveled around quite a bit with the Forces. Before I joined up I had lived in the same village since I was born. I'll probably stay where I am now until I retire, and then buy a smaller house somewhere cheaper.

I have lived in the same city since I was five months old, and have lived in the same building (in different apartments) for the last 30 years. Ouch.

I moved 8 times in 12 months once - different cities, different suburbs, different states. EXHAUSTING. I had one box that had never been unpacked since I first packed it for the first move, so I threw it out without opening it. I knew that if I opened it, I'd keep all the garbage I clearly could live without, so I just tossed it.
It's funny. I agree that "Home is where the heart is", and I've never felt at home in the town where I grew up. I once drove into this little town in outback Queensland and had the weirdest feeling. In my heart of hearts, I knew that I was home. It was the oddest sensation, but one that I will remember forever. Kinda makes me wish I'd stayed. HA!
My great-grandmother has lived in the same house for the past 76 years - the house she went home to the night of her wedding. My grandma has been in the same house for 50-something years. Same deal. I wish my life were that simple.

Well , some amazing stories there! I must add that at the last count (and I do miss one or two,) this address in HK is my 28th!. So it is quite something for me to have been in this house for 30 years.

Born and raised in Winnipeg and I've been in my present house since 1973. I guess that's why we travel a lot.

I've been in Israel since 1982, in Jerusalem since 1984 and same neighbourhood (but not same apartment) for 17 years. Stuff accumulates! When all the kids have moved on I'd like to get rid of a lot of stuff and move somewhere smaller and more out in the country. We stayed put for the sake of continuity in the kids' schooling but I don't get attached to places so much, home is where I sleep. I've lost count of the actual number of buildings I've lived in.
