RMG, it looks like it might be what we call a pontytail palm. I can't see the base under the leaves. Does it have a narrow trunk which suddenly broadens out near the ground?

I got back an hour ago from a very exhausting week-end of English Civil War re-enactment, camping of course.
Here's a picture of a Parliamentarian artillery officer of Hampden's Regiment, firing a cannon - actually a 'minion-drake', see Hampdens

This flower was growing outside my sister's fence. Not sure what it is, but thought it rather pretty.

What a five year old does when you tell him to clean his room. I was asking for it I guess!

Thanks for the ideas about my triffid, but it doesn't seem to resemble any of the plants that I've seen via the links.
MotherGoose, no it doesn't get wider near the base. It's the same width all the way down.

This may sound an odd question, but does the plant ever get any flowers RMG?

So far, no. We think the plant is about 8 or 9 years old.

Thanks RMG. I just had a thought that it looked a whole lot like my soft leaved yucca. But you would have had flowers on a spike from the middle. Oh well, guess I'll keep my eye out. I do agree that it is a palm of some sort now that I know there are no flowers.

I am amazed at everybody's artistic talent - Hats off to all of you!

Bhs, I have a special fondness for lighthouses and the one you posted looks great. Thank you for sharing it!

This morning I opened the door for the doggie to go out, and this is the first thing I saw on my balcony...

I thought the shadows looked nice .

It still looks like this to me...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire/content/articles/2006/10/18/ask_the_gardener_yuccas_feature.shtml

The photo is of a Cordyline australis.

If you strip away the lower dead leaves it starts to be a trunk.

I agree, it's a Cordyline Australis. As the dead leaves are stripped off or fall off naturally, the trunk will get higher, while the green 'palm' foliage remains the same. Your plant looks exactly like mine did before the 'trunk' developed.
Here's another photo of my historical re-enactment event at the week-end - the apothecary and her young assistant:

Oh Copago, I did the same when I was 5, & Mrs. Argus would tell you I would still be doing it if I could get away with it. Neat Photo Denni.

Here is a photo I took of the Reindeer at our zoo. At first I thought it wasn't very good but the lighting makes it look artistic?

Ummmmm maybe not.

I've been keeping my fingers busy lately. I have made bookmarks for all the Harry Potter series, and this is the final one, for Deathly Hallows

I really admire the talent your daughter has at drawing Au Natural

I love that lighthouse, bhs. And the shadows, denni.

Great idea to make your own bookmarks, Jane. That one looks lovely.

Copago, Conor obviously has the same idea of "tidying up" as I have. For the last thirty years or so I've had a divan-base type of bed: the major disadvantage of it is that I can't shove anything underneath it.

The old manor house at Bexhill was pulled down in the 1960s, but bits and pieces still stand in the grounds, which have been turned into a pleasant little park. This fireplace, standing in the middle of nothing, was a fairly late addition to the house, dating from the 1890s.

Copago, enjoyed the photo--it sure brought back memories! Very cute.

bhs63, nice photo! I've always found lighthouses fascinating.

Denni, that is an interesting photo!

Thank you, Jane, I will tell her that!

Most people (at least here in the states) will be familiar with the stackable, white, box-like beehives called a Langstroth Hive. We use what is called a (Tanzanian) Top Bar Hive, as shown below. One advantage to this type of hive is that it doesn't use frames, thereby allowing the bee to form a more natural-sized comb which in turn produces a more natural-sized bee.

I don't have any photos to post but I wanted to tell all of you how much I enjoy this thread. I hope it's OK that I just drop in to look at your views of the world from time to time. I kind of feel like a spy because you all seem to know each other so well. Your friendship makes me smile. Thank you.

Awww, I got the warm and fuzzies reading that. I guess they aren't a bad bunch to hang around But there's always room for more, Teresa!

Cinnamon, does Kennywood have anything to do with Kenny Rogers? And if so is it as tacky as it sounds?

Am loving the Prince Edward Island pics - perfect!

Here is an old bit of farm machinery - a scoop for scooping dirt out of dams. A horse or bullock would pull it and a man would stand on a step at the back controlling the horse and the couple of levers. An early loader if you will.

I have always been fascinated by Moon Gates. We have many here in Hong Kong , and today I went to a beautiful park (Kowloon Walled City Park) where there were some lovelyexamples. As you can see, the frame formed by the opening often makes the scene beyond look like a painting. I liked this one.

Another Moon Gate, same park
