Ever since The Lord of the Rings films were a success (and Harry Potter to an extent); studios have been quick to jump on the fantasy film bandwagon, but most ending in dismal results. I was so excited about the Eragon film but after seeing the trailers and reading about it I haven't even bothered to see it on DVD. An exception is the Narnia film, which was quite well made, and Bridge to Terabithia was excellent but that's not so much a fantasy film as it is a heartfelt story about friendship. I'm anxious about The Golden Compass, based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and one of my favourite series'. The trailers hype it up so much, being from "New Line Cinema" and refers to LotR as well so time will tell.
I've only read the first novel of The Dark is Rising series so I don't think I'll be seeing the film anytime soon, even if it's good.
