While I generally listen to pretty mainstream/classic stuff, I am rather into some Celtic rock/tribal/folk bands. Not the quiet, whiny, real folksy stuff--but the kinds that make it impossible for you not to dance. Or at least tap your feet and dance. Wicked Tinkers, Tempest and Seven Nations are a few that I really like. Another obscure band I really like is my ex-husband's. The Flakes. (Not the Swedish power pop group of the same name...) They're a sort of '60s garage band. Think The Seeds, 13th Floor Elevators, Chocolate Watchband--add a healthy dose of Ramones, put Keith Moon on drums...louder, faster and fuzzier might describe it. As a live band, they're fantastic. Don't translate quite as well recorded... Anyway, they have a MySpace page with clips if anyone's interested. (They're The Flakes that are from Castro Valley)

I like 'obscure' bands though. I like listening to things no-one else does, anyone else agree with that?
I mean back when 'bullets' came out NO-ONE knew who MCR was, it was like my own thing, and it stayed that way until 'The Black Parade' CD came out. But i enjoy people knowing who they are now as well, because then you can talk to people about your music.

Dashboard Confessional rock! I absolutely love their stuff, especially the "Dusk & Summer" album.
I honestly don't really care whether people like the stuff I listen to. I'm not one of those people who tries to fit in, but I won't purposefully try to be different either.
Anyone else know the Rascal Flatts, just out of interest?

I've heard of and listen to all of these bands with the exception of Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Everdae. I enjoy them all. What are SKSK and Everdae like? In the same genre as the rest?

Rascal Flatts are HUGE where I live. I think everyone here knows them and has probably seen them in concert at least once.

Really? No one in S Africa knows them at all, but I absolutely fell in love "What Hurts The Most" when I heard it (once, and only once) on the radio. So I started looking form some of their stuff, and found I really liked it a lot.

I'm from the US, so, i guess that makes a difference. I love them though. What hurts the most makes me tear up every time i hear it. Do you know about Keith Urban? If you like Rascal Flatts, then you should LOVE Keith Urban.

Well living in Aus, i seem to listen to alot of obsucre bands, some of my American friends have heard of them, but none of my friends here or family know any of my fav band's (besides MCR, because they hear it 24/7) Here are some of my other fav's they dont know (and dont want to know becuase they think it is too heavy) Trivium 3 Days Grace Monster Magnet Alter Bridge Zebrahead
Three Days Grace is one of my favorite bands. I have even been lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. Canadian bands ROCK!

Obscure music is what I prefer. Those little known, seldom heard artists. I suppose these days it's easy finding and enjoying obscure bands. There simply are more people creating and releasing music through various mediums.
It would be difficult listing a favorite band or artist. Even for a certain genre. But I'll mention some favorites I've come across in the last few years:
Robert Johnson & the Punch Drunks Selda Bagcan Gentleman Caller (the Indiana band) Mondo Topless Blanche Afrodizz Kraan Green Pajamas Star & Key of the Indian Ocean Acid Mothers Temple Wooden Wand Popium Nikki Corvette Dr. Frankenstein Xhol Caravan Mocca The Barbary Coasters Irene Susanna & the Magical Orchestra I'm From Barcelona
Hard to gauge what's obscure. I don't listen to radio anymore and pretty much find music on my own.

Rogue, What's your favorite "genre"? I pretty much find my music the same way you do, but have never heard of any of the bands on your list. Are there any that you would recommend that i check out?

Anyone heard of "Big Sound Authority"? They were a blue-eyed soul-Northern soul band from UK and released one album before splitting up. Although they were active during mid-80's they still sound fresh today methinks.
I like "The Men They Couldn't Hang"...

Surf instrumental is my favorite genre. From the list I made, the surf bands include Star & Key of the Indian Ocean, Dr. Frankenstein and Robert Johnson & the Punch Drunks (although they lean more towards R&B/surf instrumentals). I prefer the "fringe" genres such as surf, power pop, garage, Afro-funk, swing, ska (not rock ska as much as Caribbean flavored ska), French pop, Cajun & zydeco, folktronica, psych-folk, and, for lack of better name, krautrock. I like obscure artists from the past as well. The new reissue craze I'm into is focused on those little known folk artists from the late '60s-early '70s who are finally seeing their material released on cd.
Plus I'm getting more into world music and non-English vocals of the genres I like. Selda Bagcan was a psych-folk singer-songwriter from Turkey in the early '70s. She may have the best set of pipes on a female vocalist these ears have ever heard. She sang protest songs and as a result, was banned from leaving the country for many years to perform. Two of her albums have been reissued in the last two years. I have to tell you, I was floored by the beauty of her voice. Didn't understand a single word but felt all the emotion within and around her voice and the words she sang.
Ok, that's more than you wanted to know. If any of the genres I mention appeal to you, let me know & I'll post some recommendations.

I listen to some non-english music, because you can feel the emotion in it, but i dont listen to it often.
My brother asked if you could please give some recomendations for Surf Instrumentals, he is into all of that stuff, he hates my 'emo' music.

That's so weird because alot of the stuff you guys are mentioning is REALLY popular over here and not obscure at all...like everything MCRismyLIFE mentioned are really popular bands over here...and Coheed and Cambria...I'm seeing them tomorrow and they are ANYTHING but obscure here in the U.S. Hawthorne Heights, Senses Fail, Taking Back Sunday, and Dashboard Confessional are also very popular. I think Hawthorne Heights is also going to be at Warped Tour tomorrow. I love Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional...also whoever mentioned NoFX...one of my favorite bands but definitely not obscure. It's so strange that to people over in like Australia this stuff is unheard of because they're all everyday names over here.

I know, i have been saying for years it all depends where you are from, becuase people i talk to in America know all of the bands i listen to, where as here people just think i am a freak.
The problem here is that they only play the same things over and over, like Justin, Fergie, Pink and Gwen (all the stuff i hate) and if you ring and request something, like one time i rang and requested 'Helena' by MCR, and they wouldnt play it because it wasnt on the playlist for that hour, which defeats the purpose of requesting a song right?!
So what you are saying is if i lived in the States, i could talk to people and they would know who all them bands are, Oh Man, i might have to go over there, i was supposed to go to the Warped Tour this year, but i have too many UNI exams, DAMMIT i could have seen Hawthorne Heights, i love them.

I'm going to Warped Tour tomorrow and I'm so excited...The Matches are going to be there which is one of my favorites...and Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, Strike Anywhere, All Time Lows, and Coheed and Cambria! There's way more but that's why I'm going...I also kind of want to see Killswitch Engage.
