It's nice to have a recipe exchange here and so much of it sounds yummy! But, we all have food we dislike. A comment (regarding the picture of a snail )made by ren in the photography thread got me to thinking. What food or foods do you dislike? Snails, oysters, brussel sprouts! Yuck! Ick! BLECH!

I like most foods but I'll agree with you on the oysters. When I was young, a boyfriend took me out to dinner at a very upmarket seafood restaurant. He ordered Oysters Kilpatrick. They smelled divine so he let me try one. What a disappointment. The texture was even worse than the taste.
I have tried snails and they are okay. I tried them in the restaurant where I worked part-time while I was at university.
I love brussel sprouts - I never met a vegetable I didn't like.
Foods I really dislike include fish (especially tuna, oily fish, and sardines), sushi, tripe, brawn and liverwurst.

Lol I was winding Sue up there!. I do not like snails either, but love the accompanying garlic butter.(Do not miss my husband much, but at least he ate the snails and let me dip my bread in the garlic butter!) I really do not like heart, tongue, brains and tripe, although I don't think many other people do either. I love all veg except butterbeans. I cannot stand tomato ketchup and mustard, it is the texture not the taste, I will eat them in cooking. Worst of all are pickles in any form Yuk yuk yukky!

Okra and yellow squash are the only veggies I don't like. Brains are quite disgusting, and curried anything makes my mouth itch...

Weetabix, to me, can only be eaten in one way and they are delicious. Dry and spread with oodles of butter - yum.

I don't like fish or any kind of seafood. I don't eat porridge either, especially 'mielie meal' which is a South African porridge and loved by most. It tastes like sand to me. I also don't like brussel sprouts, feta cheese, olives, asparagus, tongue, pork, veal and I don't drink coffee. Other than that I'll eat anything .

The smell of any sort of liver cooking makes me faint...vital organs are for straining out body toxins and distributing blood flow - not eating. I love most any sort of veggie ...sadly I have tried brussel sprouts and found them to be impossible to eat, along with collard greens. I love fresh cooked spinach however - so go figure. I have the typical Texas romance going on with most kinds of seafood...fried oysters, shrimp done ANY style, from gumbos to etouffee's. However, I don't really like the taste of crawdads [ crayfish] which is something you don't dare say out loud in the region I'm from. They may revoke your driver's licence, or right to vote, or something. I love oatmeal, millet and cream of wheat mostly for their strange textures. Same goes for tapioca.

I'm not overly fussy with foods but I do mainly like traditional types of stuff. I really can't stand semolina pudding! (Or it might be tapioca, or both.. been so long since I tried whatever it was I can't remember!) Had Hoi Sin sauce from a takeaway once and it was the foulest thing that ever crossed my lips! Yuk! Oh and Nasi Goreng bleugh! Don't like liver or any other kind of offal type stuff! YUK! I like all vegetables, even brussel sprouts! As far as seafood goes I like most types of fish, mussels etc but I don't think that I could ever try an oyster. I think that the texture would make me feel ill!

Yes, how could I have forgotten liver. I get ill at the smell of it so it never crosses my front door. Blech! And another, grits -- BLECH! On the other hand I love Cream of Wheat with milk and sugar on it. They are so near in texture I don't understand why I like one and not the other. Maybe wheat versus corn?? No innards at all. Not in my back yard. I dislike greens, yet love my spinach recipe.

Nuts - mainly it's the texture I don't like, but I will eat certain things with ground almonds or hazelnuts in it. The one major exception to that is peanuts - I cannot stand them in any way, shape or form. They make me want to retch.
Avocadoes, corn, offal, shellfish - forget about it!

I love Subway sandwiches but I don't like black olive and jalepeno pepper toppings. Also, I don't like sour cream.

One “food” that I’ve never had the courage to try is the ancient British delicacy of jellied eels. I’d rather like to know what they taste like, but I don’t know whether I’ll ever have the nerve to try them.
Like several of you, I don’t really like fish ( I have a John Bull prejudice in favour of red meat in large quantities); but as I get older and a bit more health-conscious I’m getting used to an occasional bit of oily fish like mackerel.
I share Ren’s aversion to tomato ketchup. In fact, I don’t much like any tomato-based stuff, including tomato soup and even pure tomato juice. Yet I can eat tomatoes with pleasure.
I love brussels sprouts and broccoli, but I draw the line at spinach. Why eat spinach when I can get the same taste by putting a dirty old penny in my mouth?

I will eat just about anything, at least once. The only three things I can think of off the top of my head that I really can't stand are pickle relish (not sure why, I like both savory and sweet pickles...), chick peas (garbanzo beans) and sea urchin. That is just...ugh. Being a big fan of Chinese food, I've eaten some pretty odd stuff (according to Western tastes) and haven't really run into anything I loathed. There were things I wouldn't care to eat again, but nothing particularly horrible. There are a couple seasonings I don't like, but I can eat if they're not too strong. Ginger and cilantro come to mind... Oh, and please don't ask me to eat anything still alive. Not gonna happen.

One thing I really don't like is beef. Every time I say I don't eat beef people are surprised and don't understand why I don't like beef, especially here in Argentina, where "asado" (cuts of meat cooked on a grill) is so popular. I just don't like the way it tastes.
I also dislike eggplants, chard and garlic. Other than that I love eating all types of vegetables.

I had never really stayed in a hospital until a month ago...I knew the food wasn't much to write home about, but, overheard my roommate yelling on the phone about how bad breakfast was and I couldn't eat yet, so thought that, I'd give anything to eat it!
So, my first meal was the next day. She was not just whistlin Dixie...it was horrible.
The oatmeal was about the worst I think I"ve ever had in my life...tasted like wallpaper glue.

Absolutely no offal for me - sorry, but I just can't come at the stuff.
I have yet to meet a vegetable I don't like - but don't ask me to eat baked beans. I love the beans themselves, but there is something about the baked beans in a tin that I can't stomach. I can't even eat them to be polite, and I can eat pretty much anything to be polite. (I've eaten my lunch at an autopsy and still saddled up for afters).
I don't like the texture of oysters - the taste is neither here nor there to me, but I can't handle the texture.
I'm not too sure how I'd go at a lot of the oriental / asian dishes that are of the more traditional variety.
And I agree with Bruyere - it doesn't seem to matter where on the planet you are, hospital food is awful. I'm sure it's so you go home sooner!

The list of foods that I don`t eat at all is much longer than the list of foods that I do eat. I`m sure that there are foods that I might like but will never try. The only things that I have tried and cannot stand,it`s an almost pathological hatred, are tomatoes and tripe. Tomato sauce on a hot dog is fine but the squishy squashiness of tomatoes turns my stomach. My father once brought home a large bag of tripe and we were forced to eat it for a couple of days,it utterly disgusted me with its texture and taste. I would rather eat a steak that has a slightly greenish tinge(and have) than eat tomatoes or tripe. Tomatoes are evil.

Great site, Roos, from another tomato-hater. I cannot eat tomato sauce or salads with tomatoes, either. The only way I can eat it is on a pizza base. I guess it has had all the nasty taste cooked out of it. Offal is awful, too, but I can eat most other foods. Oysters, Brussel sprouts, spicy stuff are all good tucker!

Gasp. Roos, you have always been so sensible [ you too, Oz] until I ran across this compact, yet telling remark... 'Tomatoes are evil'.Is there no help? No twelve step program we could pay to enroll you both in? No counseling available? So sad... lives so lacking in free radical fighting anti oxidents...

I weep for your prostate, Roos.
Tomatoes are one of the best things out there for prostate protection!
Being a girly, I don't have to eat tomatoes!!!!

Thanks Oz I also can eat those wretched things on a pizza base, but in their pure form....shudder. Kt there certainly is a type of program to assist those that have problems with evil tomatoes,I actually came up with the concept myself. It`s a simple two step program that has very satisfying results for most tomato haters. Step one. Step two.
