I think I'd have to agree with Taesma about the piano and coordination. I'm fine with my right hand and since the accordion only calls for two left-hand fingers in operation at the same time--no problem there. The organ, although it involved more left-hand fingers, wasn't bad either because they didn't have much moving around to do except at chord changes. But with the piano you've got ALL five left-hand fingers dancing across the keys simultaneously with the right hand, and that just intimidates the heck out of me (but believe it or not, I can pat my head and rub my belly at the same time)! Quote:
I've been a singer all my life, can sight read, and know some theory--but I've never been able to get beyond the basics of piano. I just don't have the coordination. Rather depressing, really, as I come from a family of musicians.
Au_Naturel, if you can play accordion, I'm sure you could play piano. What styles of music do you play? My Uncle played accordion (his main instrument was cornet, however), and he played many styles well, but he was particularly skilled at classical. You don't hear classical accordion very often, but it's very nice.
About 90% of my sheet music is remnants from my organ days, so there's a fairly good variety--gospel, classical, lots of waltzes, a few marches, and a polka or two sprinkled here and there.
I believe I can relate to your 'depression.' In my mind, the accordion was meant for playing polkas and I come (partially) from a Polish background, so it's rather disappointing to me that I can't play like Lawrence Welk or Frankie Yankovic or even my aunt, for that matter! Worse yet, I can count on one hand the number of polkas I even know! (I am working--ever so slowly--on rectifying that, though).

I play oboe and bassoon. I taught myself clarinet so I could play in my college's pep band and I taught myself some piano - but only as long as the left hand parts aren't overly complicated.

I've always found the oboe very intriguing.

I have a harmonica and a keyboard, but I'm not very good at playing either of those. I can play Turkish March by Mozart on keyboard, but only the right hand notes. I've always wanted to play the drums, and I plan to learn one day. My brother is buying me a violin for Christmas, so I'll spend my time becoming very good at that before I begin with drums. My brother has a lot of lyrics that he plans on using, and I plan to play my violin in the band that we will eventually start up. I want to be the drummer one day too, but I'll see how that turns out. I also used to play the trumpet at school, which was quite fun. I was in a brass band as well, but I can't lose myself emotionally in brass music; it's not personal enough to move me. Strings are a different story though.

Yes, there is a local band where I live called Akoustic Oddessey (spelling? I know the first word is spelt right, but the second...).
Acoustic Odyssey is the correct spelling of the words.
I know, but they spell it with a K. But thanks for the second one...I'm usually good with spelling but my brain must have died.

My major instrument is Cornet (Trumpet). I love to play music from the baroque and romantic period though I like all classical music. Favorite composers to play... Hayden, Corelli, Vivaldi and Mozart.
I also play to some degree the following:
Keyboard (all types)Organ both Electronic and Pipe. Piano, electronic home entertainment keyboards. Trombone (this is my favorite as far as listening. I love the mellow tones of a good trombonist in the high range). Flute Clarinet (Bb, alto, Bass, Contra Bass) Saxophone (all..soprano, alto, tenor and baritone) French Horn All the bowed string instruments even though not very proficient (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass) Guitar (acoustic strum - rhythm chords only...maybe a little arpegiated counter picking) Percussion instruments not limited to just drums i/e Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone etc. Tuba and Sousaphone (oom pa pa)

Nice to meet you. It looks like you could almost form your own orchestra, so long as you could clone you lots of times :P
LOL Well, what I didn't mention in my previous post was that I'm a former music educator. Learning how to play nearly everything was part of my education.

I play piano and violin and i can play viola, cello, bass (upright), mandolin, and a bit of guitar. The instruments I really want to learn how to play are the clarinet and the oboe. I love them. I also would like to play cello. That is, more than I do now, anyway.

I play the CD player, but fortunately I have a niece I can live vicariously through who plays clarinet and has been accepted into the local junior symphony orchestra. She also plays a mean piano which strikes me as being the standard instrument for musically inclined folk. Is that right, i'm assuming it's because of the connection between the keys and musical theory.

I play piano, and write my own songs. I have a digital one, so can change the instrument to harpsichord or street organ if aI want—or even pipe organ. Some of my pieces sound better on organ than piano, though I wouldn’t want to actually learn to play one as I think it would be too hard (and hence ruin the enjoyment of playing my own music).
My three favorite instruments fall into the same category as the organ: wouldn’t want to learn to play, but love to listen to). Oops, just realized there are four instruments: they are the bagpipe, fiddle, harp and violin (certain cello and recorder numbers are in there, too).
I sang in chorus in middle school and high school.
And I took piano lessons for about eleven years (I learned via the Suzuki Method, which means I learned by ear. I always found the other students were so much more dedicated than me, which is why I stopped taking lessons after I was forced to quit, after graduation. I don’t miss it, though, as I’ve now found the way to keep playing music in which I don’t feel forced).
I tried teaching myself to play by learning Braille music, but that language just never came through for me (I can read Braille fine, but Braille music’s impossible). I have improvised with the radio (meaning that some songs I really like, I’ve taught myself to play. I did this back when I went to the Adventist church as well).
As of this writing, I have just played five of the hymns I used to (two are from church, the other three are ones I learned out of a book at piano lessons). I hadn’t played those in three years or more.
Some of the pieces I write have lyrics, though most don’t. (In the one case, I flipped it: one of my originals became the melody to a poem I’d written years before).
I agree voice is an instrument, but often mine just doesn’t cooperate.

I don't play anything really, I can knock out a tune on a recorder and a flute, but like Rowena I'm out of practise. I have an unused clarsach sitting in a corner of the bedroom that I might well resurrect when I retire. However, my husband is an Early Music specialist, and plays several sorts of lutes, four course guitar, cittern and treble recorder. He also makes lutes and sings in a renaissance choir. So I'm a bit reluctant to start squeaking away with 3 blind mice. He was mumbling about a set if virginals and a theorbo at one point, but we'd need more room.

I played piano for 7 years from kindergarten through 6th grade. In 6th grade I picked up the oboe, and have been playing that since (for 11 years). Edit for spelling...spelled kindergarten wrong...I always seem to do that!
