Chertoff was mentioned as a possible replacement. People at work seemed to think that it might be another 'Harriet Miers' thing where Chertoff wouldn't get the nomination, so Bush would then nominate someone like the head of the FBI (Mueller) to the position.

Uh huh. And I've heard that Democrats of Congress aren't going to bury the hatchet either - they want to continue to find out more information on the firings of those judges. Also, I read somewhere that the firings may have been done to achieve the purpose of handicapping Democratic political powers... and while Gonzales was in office, he was to be questioned about the firings. But wouldn't you know, President Bush halted the idea of questioning him. Corruption? Yes, please! I sincerely hope the investigation on this ridiculous topic continues. "Good name dragged through the mud by foes" my foot!
