At about 8pm tonight, Sydney time, the moon will pass into the earth's shadow, and create a lunar, or blood-moon eclipse. It should last about 90 minutes, and, unlike a solar eclipse, it is safe to view with the naked eye, or telescopes/binoculars, etc. This site has more information.

Do you know what time the lunar eclipse will occur in Canadian Eastern Standard Time.

After seeing this thread I remembered an e.mail I received about Mars, went to check and realised I just missed it. Darn!
This is the basic information:
Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.
It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on 27 Aug when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.
Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.
And I missed my chance.

Don't worry, lady1, you didn't miss it. Or, at least, it's not the only time Mars will be close. That's an urban legend. Check out this page on Snopes: Mars Spectacular

This is great. Five minutes ago three-quarters of the moon was red, and the tip a thin arc of white. Pretty. Now with all of it covered with the reddish tinge it looks like a very near planet rather than the moon.
Too bad it comes out looking too small to notice any detail on my digital camera but I'm glad to be able to witness it with my own eyes.

I just watched it and took a couple of snaps. I recall seeing the last one and was just as amazed. Photo one here. Photo two here.

That's great, Roos! Mind if I copy them (just for my own album)? Couldn't do it with my camera.
Quite the appropriate avatar there, Blurry!

Heavan's Arrow, in the link in the first post by Ozzz, it has a graphic in there that should help you. On Pacific Daylight Time it will be total at 2:52am Quote:
The full eclipse will be visible between 7:52pm and 9:23pm Sydney time (2:52am and 4.23am U.S. Pacific time), according to the Sydney Observatory, and may turn the Moon blood red.

Awesome photos, Roos. It just came out as small dots on mine and got even harder to depict as the colours of the moon darkened. You must have an excellent camera. What type is it? Copago, I noticed my avatar related to this event too! I just love the night-time sky and everything to do with it.

Wow, it's really high in the sky now, four and a half hours after the partial phase started. And an incredibly bright white.

Those ARE great photos, Roos! I couldn't bring myself to get up 2 hours after going to bed to see it here in Ohio. I'm hoping to still be sucking air when the next one comes around in 6 months. Thanks to all for the links also.

I didn't get up early to see it, but just stayed up! Checked about 4 am here and found it with just a sliver left. I tried to take a couple shots, but could not hold my camera steady enough (and too lazy to go upstairs to get the tripod). Watched for about half an hour. Your photos are great Roos! To me it's so moving -- like "golly, that's happening and I can see it right in our solar system!"

Thanks Copago , please feel free to copy those snaps. Thanks twice over Lioness ,I`m glad you liked the photos. Thanks Blurrystar, the camera is an Olympus 750 Ultrazoom,it has 10x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom which in theory gives you 40x zoom but the digital zoom gets a little too pixelated when you`re taking snaps of things over a couple of kilometers away. To help overcome that problem I use an Olympus 1.7x tele conversion lens which then gives me 17x optical zoom. I changed the ISO setting from auto to 100 for the snaps and also used a tripod. I did try the digital zoom as well but the results were less than average, though I did get a great view of the moon through the lens. The camera can be purchased with many accessories on eBay at different times for less than $200.00 these days. Thanks for the compliments Lady,Jordandog and Jar.
