I certainly don't disagree with Myra - it would absolutely fit there - but Ellis Island is of such importance to the personal history and identity of so many Americans (myself included) that I would opt for the broader category of History : U.S. History myself.

Well, it must be a slow day or something. You are the only one that answered me Stu, but I liked your suggestion so I used it. I'll let you know how it pans out.

Apologies for hijacking your thread, myrab51, but can anyone suggest a place for a quiz I'd like to write? I want to call it 'What's it got in its pocketses then?' and it will literally be about what I've got in my pockets and be general knowledge - e.g. I might have a yo-yo in my pocket and I would ask a question, perhaps about a yo-yo trick or about what yo-yos were made of originally (just an example). The only thing that occurs to me is Mixed General, but that's closed. Any ideas?

I am not a General editor, but it sounds like General: Thematic Fun to me.

I seem to recall doing some quizzes on pocket lint some time ago. If you search you will probably find it and know the category. I found one at: http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/General/Pocket-Lint-The-Report-191579.html

Nah, you didn't hijack it from me QB It's been used by a few other folks before me as well. I'd rather see it all go on one thread personally.

Thanks CellarDoor, Bracklaman and jonnowales for your suggestions. I'll try 'Thematic Fun' - can my pocket be a theme? :-) And many thanks for your forebearance myrab51!

I've been mulling over a potential quiz topic, and wanted to think out loud about how to categorize it - and perhaps someone could confirm whether my thoughts are ok.
Say I wanted to write a quiz on sociological thought in John Lennon songs (or not even specifically songs, but his activism stunts, or something). And the two obvious categories that come to mind for a quiz of this nature are the John Lennon category, and the Social Science category for the sociology aspect. But I guess this would depend on how I ask the questions, right? Like if I was asking about Marxism in the song "Working Class Hero" and asked it in a way like "One of Marx's ideas was that religion is used to control the population; which Lennon tune makes reference to this idea?" then that sort of question should belong in the Lennon category because it requires knowledge of his songs. But if I were to ask the same question in a way like "The song "Working Class Hero" makes reference to religion being used to 'dope' the population; which sociological thinker proclaimed that "religion is the opiate of the masses"?", then that would need to go in the Social Sciences category, because to answer that question you need knowledge of sociology and Karl Marx's ideas.
Furthermore, I would have to ask the questions consistently in either of those ways, because I cannot write a quiz that is primarily reliant on knowing Lennon's music, and categorize it as such, and then throw in 2 or 3 questions that ask for knowledge of sociology.
...Right?

Another one on here rather than starting a new thread; where would be best for a quiz on the death rituals of various cultures and/or religions?

As yet another opinion, if you're focusing on religious rites, then Religion would be a good home for it; there's a Religion Mixture subcategory under World Religion.
World:Cultures or World:Global Trivia could also conceivably be a good home for such a quiz.
As with so many of these gray areas, a lot depends on your approach!

I think it will probably be more the cultures than thematic fun - "fun" just doesn't seem "suitable" for talking about death somehow! Thanks for the suggestions folks

With Halloween coming up, I was thinking of doing a quiz on that asks questions on different Halloween episodes of tv shows, and questions on Halloween movies, and other Halloween specials. I noticed there is a section for Halloween movies and Halloween tv, and then I noticed a Halloween World category. Since my quiz will have both types of questions, should I just put it in the Halloween World? Thanks, Amy

The Halloween category in World is meant mainly for quizzes about Halloween itself. So not for quizzes about Halloween related entertainment. Have you checked if there's a Halloween subcat in the Entertainment category?

I don't see one regarding Halloween within Entertainment. There is, however, a subcat with TV & Movies Mixture.

Entertainment has a subcategory titled Entertainment by Themes. Your Halloween quiz may fit in there.
However, be very much aware that quizzes with a theme nature have to follow the style of quizzes already in that specific subcategory.
All questions for theme quizzes have to be Entertainment related and cannot be comprised of just two topics (i.e. Television and Movies). The theme quizzes in Entertainment need to be a complete and true mixture of all things related to Entertainment.
To be more specific: Entertainment : Entertainment by Themes : Seasonal Entertainment

Thanks for all the helpful information. As I'm looking around, I think I may have found possibly the Something In Common category. Having to do with Halloween would be what they have in common.
Here is one of the questions I was thinking of doing in the quiz. In "The Halloween Dream" episode of "Little House On The Prairie", what do Albert and Laura dress up as? Indians Clowns Ghosts Monsters
