Why does a prism's shadow consist of 7 colors? Please help me! Thanks!

it's because when the light strikes at exactly the right angel of incidence (the angle it hits the prism at) and the light is "bent" refracted through it, a prism is a special case because it has angles of 45 degrees and the light ray 'splits' as it comes through and becomes a rainbow.
(More or less lol it's been years since I 'did' that stuff, but that's how I explain it... hope it makes sense. If you want the totally technical answer you need a physicist - or google refraction through a 45 degree prism)

On that topic, I would also like to know why the colors of a prism is the same as the colors of a rainbow.

Seven colors? It would depend on how many facets the prism has. Transmitted light waves actually slow down when they enter a prism and resume the speed of light when exiting the prism. All light is composed of 3 colors: red, green and blue. All other colors are combinations of these primary colors. Secondary colors are cyan, magenta and yellow.
For example, when you combine equal amounts and intensities of red with green you get yellow.

It can be very confusing and I'm sorry that I don't have a good web site to recommend. Kodak used to have a booklet that showed the visible spectrum and explained color combinations better than I can.

Rowena had a good suggestion: Google, and good luck.

If I remember rightly from a few years back, it is because a rainbow is created by light refracting though raindrops, and they are essentially prismic in shape, well enough to refract the right colours.

Light comes in 7 visible colours, and those colours are the ones refracted through a clear prism/raindrop/sprinkler spray.

I hope that was right.

No problem, I just hope I wasn't wrong.

Each colour of light, red, green, etc is a slightly different wavelength so travel through "stuff" prisms, raindrops, whatever in a slightly different way. (I daren't commit to different speed lol as I can't remember for sure)
When we see things as a particular colour, green grass for example, it's because the grass absorbs the other wavelengths more and reflects the green most and thus appears green (again, PLEASE let that be the right way round regarding absorb and reflect lol, it's been a LONG time since I did any physics)

I think it might be the other way 'round...I'll check Wiki.

You were right. It's the ones that aren't absorbed that we see.

Rowena, you can commit to a change of speed.

As the ray of light leaves the density of one medium (the air) and into another medium (the glass prism for instance), the light slows down.

So - As the light passes through media of differing densities, the speed of that ray changes hence the angle of refraction.

White light is composed of, as has been said, the aforementioned colours - hence why it is the same colour as the rainbow - as, whatever the material - glass, water, as long as the refractive index is correct - the same colours will be dispersed.

Hope that goes someway to clarification.

Yes, that helps a lot Jon. I always wondered why the colors are the same. I can google it but your explanation makes it easier to understand. Great explanation!
Thank You
Trevor

I rarely dare commit to knowing my name these days jon lol, but it's nice to know some things in my memory are still there

Haha, especially when it is an area of science as exciting as physics!

Seriously, no sarcasm there

I am glad I could contribute to your understanding - fascinating subject!
