Where will you be for the game, QB? Always like watching the big games in a smoky, crowded pub myself. Of course it's mostly been relegated to the inside pages here once we were kicked out. Actually I'll have to check if it's even gonig to be shown live for me - I've only got a dicky TV channel that doesn't always show the big games and it's not live on payTV.

I'd like to be at home, but the mate who I'm going to be watching it with likes pubs - no longer smoky, alas ;-( so we'll be watching it in the pub and nipping out for a stogie at half time. I hope they show it for you - I too only have terrestrial and I bet the decider (which should be great) is relegated to satellite/freeview ;-(

Just looked it up and yes, the final is live but not the bronze medal one. Yay! Quote:

Can I ask our Australian and NZ friends reading this what the general feeling is over there regarding the final.
It's just that I heard that most Aussies were now wanting an England win. Is that remotely true? Do you really dislike South Africa that much? Or couldn't you care since the Wallabies were knocked out?

I don't get to talk to many people but just going on the news it's hardly rating a mention, really. The sports news channel ran a story about Lewsey not being available but that's the only one I can think of since Australia was knocked out.
I did talk to two Kiwis this morning and the general consensus is that we don't care who wins but we just want a good close and exciting game.

Exciting! That's what I'm looking for too. All the 'World Cup Wonders' here think I should be supporting England (I'm a Scotland supporter), regardless of how dull or ugly the game is. Can't I just be on the side of whoever is playing the best rugby? Discuss.

yay for Argentina A tourney like this one will give Rugby a good boost in Argentina, I think. Here is the sportsdaq profile for one of the Saffers - made me laugh and I will be watching his hair tomorrow morning! http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/sportdaq/trade.cgi?showIssue=680

I found this while surfing about today. Peter Fitzsimons played for the Wallabies way back when.

THE FITZ FILES
AND so it has come to this.
You and me, babe, reduced to cheering for South Africa in a Rugby World Cup final, consoling ourselves that at least they are the team of Nelson Mandela (who unfortunately won't be able to turn up at the final in Paris tonight). And yet, in many ways, there can be little argument that both England and South Africa deserved to make it.
South Africa are there because they have simply been the best team to date, extremely strong in the forwards and powerful across the field in the backs. Apart from one serious wobble against a rampant Fiji, who nearly stole the game, they have been easy and worthy winners over every opponent. England got there on character alone, having demonstrated that despite having a game as ugly as a hatful, despite having lost 15 of their last 16 away matches before the World Cup began, despite having lost 36-0 to South Africa in the early rounds, and having blown out to a 272-1 chance to win the whole thing for sheer will-to-win and guts-it-out-ed-ness, they really are world class. Good luck to them both. Bugger it.
from here - SMH
And from the same article
Q. If the World Cup finalists play for the William Webb Ellis Trophy, what is the name of the trophy played for by the teams finishing seventh and eighth?
A. The Bledisloe Cup!
(Time for just a couple more!)
Q. What did the All Blacks do as their contribution to limiting the emissions that cause global warming?
A. Dropped the Wallabies off on the way home!
Q. How do you get a champagne cork back into the bottle?
A. Ask any Aussie supporter.

To all my friends in the Forum about the world rugby championship: We are all very happy because the Pumas did the best they could. They played well and showed they have guts and desire to win. Remember that we beat great teams as Scotland and Ireland and got drunk with champagne rugby twice. Today I must say:"Come on good old England!"

It's an hour and a half to the start of the rugby world cup final and I can feel the excitement around me, and in my country. People are walking around with their flags and wearing 'bokke' rugby tops. The braais (barbeques) are in full swing and the feeling of unity is great. Win or loose this has been a great experience for everyone and has definitely brought people closer together. So GO BOKKE!!!

Who knows? (My mate didn't show, so I'm at home with a pint and a fag!) Yes, but can you take a man called Percy seriously? ;-)

ROFL!!!! Good point. But perhaps you missed his hair?
Well, it was a good tough game - perhaps not the nailbiting excitement that would have been great but it was a great defensive battle.
That disallowed Pom try was so touch and go and probably hurt them mentally there for a while.
So, sory to the English supporters but a bit CONGRATS to the South Africans! Well done. Great celebrations there at the end too - nice touch with Mbeki.
