I wonder why the sky is blue? Why isn't is red or purple. I think it's blue because blue praticlly suits every single thing all except for people. I think though that the sky should be the colour white because during the night the sky is black .

I think that there was another topic on this somewhere.

It is because (if I remember) the majority of the earth's surface is covered with water, and water is a bluish colour. The sky is a reflection of the earth's surface, and the blue colour is the strongest so that makes the sky blue.

That wasn't very clear, I ran out of words and had a mental blank halfway through.

Someone smarter than me can tidy that up a bit I hope.

The article in Wiki explains it best, it is to do with light molecules.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diffuse_sky_radiation then scroll down to color.

Well I am not a big scientist but i can tell you that there is mixtures of gas in the outer level of atmosphere because of which the sky looks blue.
But imagine what if the sky were red or green.
lolzz....

Actually, if we didn't know any better, it would just be the norm for us

Well, it frequently is red or purple - or orange, or a variety of shades. Look at the new avatar for this thread as a good example
