On this day in 1913, Publication of First Section of "Remembrance of Things Past"
At the age of 35, French writer Marcel Proust (1871-1922) became a recluse, and retreated to an apartment in Paris. He devoted the rest of his life to writing a 16-volume novel-cycle known in English as "Remembrance of Things Past." The first section was published on November 16, 1913 at Proust's own expense. World War I delayed publication of the next section, but when it appeared, Proust gained international recognition. Aside from its narrative complexity and psychological insight, "Remembrance of Things Past" is a profound exploration of personal memory and the psychological experience of time.
