If you haven't picked up one of his books you do not know what you are missing.

I am just starting to read the Fellowship of the Ring and I LOVE it. It is a very compelling book and the story folds nicely together. I just cannot wait to read the next two in the series . . .

For anybody who doesn't know, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote 'The Hobbit', 'Fellowship of the Ring' and two other sequels. (I wish I could remember them right now) The books are about hobbits -- somewhat like dwarves and the such. Now, it is not a 'baby book' -- it is definently advanced reading.

Oddly enough, BoyScout, I just finished The Return of The King, part three of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, a couple of nights ago. (The second book you cannot remember is titled The Two Towers)

You HAVE read The Hobbit haven't you? A wonderful book, and it will help provide some vital background information on questions you may have once you get deeper into the tale. I would almost argue that it should be read BEFORE attempting 'The Lord of the Rings.'

I'm curious where you are in the story... what's happening where you are in the book? (This last reading was the fourth go around for me... I know it like the back of my hand. Hubby thinks I'm weird reading books about hobbits, elves, wizards and the like.)
If you have any questions or reach a stumbling block of some sort as you travel along, feel free to PM me. You are quite right... it's not what anyone would ever classify as 'children's lit,' altho the story did grow out of the bedtime tales Tolkien told his children.

I applaud you on this worthwhile endevor. You will really enjoy the books!

Keep me informed how the story is going for you!

Valerie

I think my problem was I read Lord of the Rings after I had widely read a lot of fantasy novels - and by then I was a little sick of wizards and little people going on journeys!!

Well written, but...

When I was in college, I had my phone number listed under "Bilbo Baggins". All my friends knew about it and if they ever lost my phone number they could get from directory assistance. Being a single girl, I didn't want my number published under my real name.

Yes, I have read the Hobbit, about a year ago, and then I got ambitious and started reading the trilogy. It is essentially a must that you read the Hobbit first . . . the whole story wont make sense to you.

I'm in the part where Frodo finds Bilbo and Gandalf in the Council of Eldron . . . just out of the first book. My book has the Fellowship of the Ring divided into Book I and Book II.

LOL JoJo!
