One of my favourite authors, Douglas Adams, died today aged 49 http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1326000/1326657.stm

I loved the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxyseries and the Dirk Gently books as well.

He also wrote a wonderful wildlife book Last Chance to See

bummer...

talented man with a great imagination.
he'll be missed.

Think I'm gonna head over to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe and meet the meat of the day. (wasn't it called Milliways?)

Douglas N. Adams was truly an inspiration to me and to one of my best friends. We will miss him greatly. My thoughts are with his family.

So Long, And Thanks For All the Fish.

I just found out about this now, from this website. I'm shocked. All the time I've been preparing myself for Kurt Vonnegut's death, and Adams goes first?

I'd like to add a quick note that didn't make it into the article (that I noticed). "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" game by Infocom was written by Adams, and I remember that being one of the few computer games I've ever played where I laughed out loud.

I will especially miss Marvin the Robot (who deserves to be mentioned at the same time as Ee-yore when one discusses the great funny losers of English literature).

Thanks for that link Tomije.

If you want to read tributes from dozens of his fans try here -

I am surprised who worldwide his popularity was.

I think of all Douglas's characters I like Marvin the most with poor Arthur coming in second. Who does everyone else like?

I think many people did like Marvin the best.

quote:
Marvin
"Life... Don't talk to me about life... Brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to take you down to the bridge. Call that job satisfaction? 'Cause I don't!"

Then he went on to complain about the doors which all had sunny and cheerful dispositions.

quote:
'You watch this door,'he muttered 'it's about to open again. I can tell by the intolerable air of smugness it suddenly generates.'

I don't own all five Hitch Hiker books so I don't know in which book they found Marvin in the car park parking spaceships. He had been doing it for million of years. Maybe it was in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and he was working at Milliway's

Oh turquoise!! I am glowing inside after that two-sentence comment of yours!

Thanks for the link, zozo! I will use it...

Yes, it's a bummer, Tyrailia. But just think of all the joy he brought to us. The way I look at it, he's justed slipped behind a molecule.
