It's a photo a building in NYC. Does anyone know what building it is? I took the photo while passing on a bus. I don't know the answer to the question. If anyone knows, please tell me. Thanks.

I'm not sure, of course, but could it be The Knox Hat Building?

Thank you for your reply. The building seems quite distinctive, considering the statues, three of them at the front on the street level and so many others lined up near the roof.

Ooops... there are four statues (not three) near street level. I notice that the columns are also very distinctive.

I love looking at photos of old buildings and also exploring the history of them Sea.

The building in your photo is the Alexander Hamilton Custom House.

Many more photos and information can be found here.

Hi veronikkamarrz,
I found a photo of the Knox Hat Building at the following website:

It doesn't look like the building in my photo, but I can see why you saw similarities.

Yes,damnsuicidalroos! That surely is the same building! Thank you for identifying it for me. The link* you provided is wonderful. It even has close-ups of the statues on and around the building! It's truly amazing to me that I have found someone who was able to identify the building. It's an impressive edifice.

It was a lot of fun looking for the building Sea. I`ll be delighted to explain the history of the building and the various ideas behind the statues to my wife and children if we ever visit New York.

Below is an excerpt from the webpage about the Alexander Hamilton Custom House, designed by the architect, Cass Gilbert. (The building is located at One Bowling Green, between State and Whitehall Streets, at the southern tip of Manhattan.):

"One of the city's most splendid Beaux Arts buildings. The monumental sculptures by French are very much part of the architecture of the façade, their whiteness-and that of those at the attic by other sculptors are a rich counterpoint to the structure's gray granite."

I snapped my photo on a sudden impulse as our bus rode by. I guess I instinctively realized that it was a special sight to see. Here is a link to my photo:

Damnsuicidalroos,
It's amazing that you were able find the answer to my question, especially because you had only my photo to go on. You must be quite knowledgeable about architecture.

Hope you have a good visit to the Big Apple.
