Can someone explain to me why I noticed on a website that WCQ has begun in South America. I know this may be a stupid question but I was just curious. Also, do anyone know the chances of Canada qualifying for World Cup 2010.

Looking at the FIFA site, the full draw for the qualifying groups takes place on 25th November. The South Americans all play in one big group so they can just get on with it and so that's why they've started their games.

Canada are obviously in the North American group and all 35 countries have entered so they are vying for 3 places (with another one place available through a play off). But until the draw, you won't know what chance the Canadians have. But , usually, the USA, the Mexicans and the likes of Costa Rica or Trinidad/Jamaica are the strongest nations.

The Conmebol, South American federation, always qualifies for the World Cup making country teams play against each other both home and away. It means that every country must play 18 games to qualify. The first four in standings qualify directly and the fifth must play against a Central American team.
Hard but exicting!

You mean the first four qualify while the fifth side has to fly to Australia on the way to the world cup.

I hope and pray that Canada can make the World Cup in 2010 for the second time in their history. Their only appearance was in 1986. Canada is not a very good soccer nation. They are the minnows of soccer. However, my question, to the soccer experts in these forums, is "What are Canada's chances of getting to the 2010 World Cup"? Predictions anyone.
