Would making ten little walks of one hundred metres have the same benefit of one longer walk of one kilometre?

We were doing this job today along a fence line and the other half wanted to keep walking back to bring the truck up closer to where we were working and I said that I would walk back and get it when we finished 'cause it would be better for me but he reckons that it's just the same. My theory is that you aren't getting the heart rate up doing little walks that you would one a longer one.

The heart rate is not likely to get any higher on a long walk, though. You have to increase the speed too.

Years ago I knew a formula to figure this out, but I of course can't remember even enough of it to know how to look for it again. Basically, you can go a short distance fast, or a long distance slow, and get the same benefit. Best of all of course is to go a long distance fast, but that's more work.

Interesting viewpoint Sue. I used to do a fast walk for three miles each day. When I mentioned to my doctor that I should be jogging, he said walking was just as good, if not better as it is not as hard on the ankles. He said as long as you get the heart rate up, and don't stop to smell the roses every 50 feet, then go ahead and walk. Of course that didn't stop me from doing some jogging as I would get the three miles over with more quickly!

What I've consistently heard for the past two decades is that a person has to get their heart rate up and keep it there for twenty minutes in order to start benefiting from it. Of course every bit helps but it can be deceiving. For example an officer can get up and down from a chair and walk across the office many times and feel very exhausted at the end of the day however there has not been much calorie consumption in the process.

When I used to go to the gym for cardiac rehabilitation they used to make us warm up then really work, then cool down. We had to keep the heart rate up so we could get maximum benefit.
