What names make you shudder? I have a little shiver at the name, Ron which is my ex's name. I am so well rid. I taught lots of boys called Gary in the past , and they all seemed to be little terrors. The name Adolf, of course, for anyone of my generation is a shudder maker.
What names give you the heebiejeebies?

I am now very upset. How rude! What lack of respect for your elders and betters! Terry, I am surprised at you . I am sure I didn't teach you to be rude like that. You must have learnt it from that old bat .I shall have words with her.

Mine is, hands down, "Maura". My apologies to any lovely Mauras out there, but my husband's ex wife is such a selfish, self-centered, difficult person, that she's ruined the name for me.

Julie - pretty much the same reason as djsgal. The cubby's ex is detestable in so many ways it's not fun to even hear that name.

I've never gotten on with any woman named Karen. Not sure what that's about - I've only met a 3 or 4, and haven't gotten on with a single one!

It certainly has to be the name FRED. I've had an unbelievable history with this name. Rick is also another one that tends to make me tense up.

Apologies to any "Britney's" or anyone who has friends or family called Britney. The name just makes me cringe I can cope with most names - after all, you usually look at the person themselves and not just the name!

I could never take to anyone called Christine - going back years to a particularly virulent Christine at school. Ever since then I just cringe when I hear the name.

Oh, I'm afraid that Brittney is on my list, too! Even though it is my grand-daughter's name, I've never cared for it. And then regarding the "ex" issue... my ex's new wife's name is Wilma... I also had an aunt named Wilma, and those are two of the most objectionable ladies I've ever met! My aunt never had a nice thing to say about anyone, and my ex's wife is convinced that since my ex and I are divorced, we MUST be enemies! What a waste of energy!

And then there is the name: Bobbi... Least said about that one, the better... an old girlfriend of my current husband, thought she was going to kill me at one point... LOL! I don't waste a lot of time on jealousy, but these ladies seem to have other ideas!

Oh boy, does this thread have the potential to offend people - considering we don't know a lot of our members' real names, or the names they have lovingly bestowed upon their offspring! (LOL)

For example, my other half is FRED and he is the sweetest and most highly principled man you could ever meet!

Apologies in advance to all the Helens out there, but that is one name I have an aversion to since I was bullied unmercifully by someone of that name. She was my office manager for ten gruelling years.

When I was young, I loved the name Jason and thought that if I ever had a son, I'd name him that. Then I taught in a boy's school for a year and without exception, the naughtiest boy in each class was a Jason. Kind of put me off!

Probably for most of us it is a name'names linked to people we din't like for some reason.

Rosemary and Helen really are two names I definitely wouldn't call my child. Then my daughter, Victoria, decided in a moment of teenage contrariness decided to call herself Helena for a change and spent two years with that name, it didn't roll off my tongue with ease as it was too close to Helen and I was glad when she reverted to her real name.

I had an uncle I despised by the name of Bruce so that name was ruined for me. Sad, too, since it was my first husband's middle name. I also had a very good friend in High School by that name and I could only call him by his last name.

Hmm - I can think of people I loathed but it didn't put me off the name per se. Which reminds me, Percy Montgomery, the South African fullback, is a gorgeous hunk, but I can't imagine ever being in the throes of passion with someone called Percy. Trevor is a name I don't like either, even though the only Trevor I can think of was a lovely man...

Monica and Melissa (particularly if known as Missy) for me. For the same reason as many here--childhood archenemies who forever tainted my opinion of those names.

Christina in itself isn't too bad, but people shorten it to Tina, or worse yet...Chrissy! Why would anyone call themself Chrissy???
And not to follow suit, but Brittney is terrible. In my experience people named Brittney are just aweful. Including, and I hate to say it, the little girl next door. She is only 4 or 5, but she is an absolute nightmare. Is it wrong to dislike a little kid? Well, I have tried and tried but the fact is, she's out of control and I can't stand her. It is probably the fault of whoever named her Brittney! If her parents were better at being parents, she may have had a chance. Poor thing.
Wow, I feel like a jerk now!

Sorry to the poor lass who comes on here and finds that so many people dislike her name! I am sure you are different!

Hopefully I'm not alone in this, but there isn't any name which makes me shudder. Just because there may have been someone, either known personally or historical, for whom I had no liking that would never influence how I felt about someone else having the same name. Even names like Adolf or Osama wouldn't make me shudder.
Occasionally decent people, who are unlucky to have the same name as a convicted murdered or paedophile, appear on television to tell how they are plagued by hate mail, vandalism, etc, just because of their name. I realise this thread isn't suggesting anyone should judge someone else by their given name, but it surely shouldn't even bring a shudder?

picqero, you are right in many ways, it shouldn't, but sad to say, it does. At least, Adolf does. The others well, maybe not a shudder, but they are names I would avoid using to name a family member, or use when writing a story etc. I didn't really mean I wanted to judge people by their name, but in some instances one does have not too pleasant memories.
