Shredded cheese, sour cream, taco ships, hot fresh baguette, chopped green onion tops, chopped fresh hot peppers, a salad (I'm thinking slightly bitter and not too crisp - arugula and leaf lettuce, say, with a creamy dressing), maybe those big soft pretzels or salt sticks you get from German bakeries....

Or did you mean beer?

Wanna hear a totally weird "Gatsby family" suggestion, Stu ? When we were growing up (and we had chili at least once a week) it was unbreakable tradition to have [I'm not kidding] peanut butter sandwiches with it . I did not care for peanut butter in the least, but was forced to oblige the rest. The sandwich was almost palatable soaked in chili, however. And (naturally) whenever I have chili at home now as an old fogey (and it helps that I've come to like Skippy, too), the old tradition is still in place.

I kinda doubt it would impress dates or 'formal' dinner guests much, though ...

Large curd cottage cheese, and good crackers.

Shredded cheese, diced onions, and sour cream for toppings, definitely. d I always make corn bread with chili, and it ends up being crumbled into the bowl instead of the traditional crackers. Sometimes I even bake the cornbread right on top of the chili! (Just make the chili in a dutch oven and spread the cornbread batter completely over the top - stick in the oven at 400 degrees until the cornbread is cooked through) Yum!

A round, hollow loaf of bread, so that the chili can be served inside (with the top as lid and dipping instrument).

I like my chilli with diced meat, any meat. Venison might work with it. Its texture is unusual so I generally prefer it cubed with rice, vegetables and spices but it may work with chilli, but now you're all just making my mouth water!

I've always wondered just what chili is! It's beef mince and things like spice, tomato and kidney beans kind of thing - like a Mexican dish, right?

Yes Jill I think they mean Chili con Carne.

Aaagghh, not kidney beans! Well, at least not for this New Mexican. We use pinto beans in our chili. According to one website, the origins of chili is from Texas and there are many different recipes. Some people may use kidney beans and others don't use any beans at all. I didn't realize how many different ways there was to make it. I'm going to have to do some experimenting.

I have served mine over spaghetti, or a small mountain of mashed potatoes. But I basically just add sour cream and a little shredded cheddar and eat as is. My hubby crumbles oyster crackers in his and drinks a nice beer with it.

I'd rather have shredded beef chili minus the beans, but with plenty of shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream and a little diced onion.

In either April or October, Hidden Cove Park has a chili cook-off. I went one year and there was a lot of different ideas. Next year, I will have to see what is offered with the different chilis. I, personally, am not a chili fan, but like to see what people do with it!

I dont really like chili but the occasional time we have it here at the house its with a baked potato and whatever you want to put on that.

The favored toppings in our household were always shredded or cubed cheese, sour cream and black olives. My three favorite ways to eat chili are with cornbread (or cornbread muffins), in a bread bowl, or with cinnamon rolls for dunking. And also, milk to drink. Milk is really good with chili.

I usually make chilli con carne with lean ground beef and beans and serve it over rice. I usually serve it with either corn chips or corn bread, as the mood takes me.

There is only one thing to serve with chili, apart form garlic bread freshly made, and that's even more chili. We also like grated mature cheddar cheese on top, and loads of freshly ground black pepper.

We serve it with rice as we got into the habit in Hawaii where it's common to have two scoops of rice in most dishes.

I'll add more coriander (cilantro) as I love it. I mean the fresh sort not the dried one.

I agree with the pinto beans...kidney beans don't have the right consistency for me.

Around here in California the kids eat Chili Cheese fries.
they put a scoop of chili onto the fries, douse it with cheese and mike it.
yuck.
