That sounds odd lol but things like if the hint says "no apostrophe" for something that usually always has one, or a name of say a ship, so there's a "The" ordinarily, then I will put the answer with and without apostrophe (or 'the') just in case someone types it automatically.

FITBs that have any punctuation are not allowed and this includes apostrophes. Some keyboards produce different apostrophes than others, so even if a player got the answer right, it might not be recognised by the FT system.

Hi delboy,
I got a big fat zero on one of your quizzes - not because I flashed through it, but because I misread the directions (doh!) and put the words in the wrong order, i.e., Carson City Nevada, instead of Nevada Carson City. (Still enjoyed the quiz, even though I slapped myself roundly.)

Thanks for bringing that one up Verbonica.

I really was a little concerned about that one. When crisw placed the quiz online, she too voiced concerns about it. I do clearly state in the intro that it's STATE followed by CAPITAL - but as you have said, it's more natural to write the Capital and then the state - as you would if addressing a letter.
If any other member has scored a zero on this quiz for THAT reason, then please either send me a note or post here and I will quite happily switch all the answers around, and change the intro.

I do put it in the hint, that's what I said lol - but even after putting it in the hint, it's "nice" to be kind and put it in the answer options too, just in case. If something "always" is said or written a certain way people tend to do it automatically and it can catch people out which is a shame if they know the answer.
Edit to add: it's not always, just on one or two where it usually has one.
There are several quizzes online where all the answers do have apostrophe's in them though, I've seen at least 3 as brain twists in the course of this GC - the "rhyming" thingy ones if you know what I mean - I can't think of the proper name for them - things like "dave's raves" to make one up off the top of my head.
I posted at the same time you did Leau so just saw your post after.

I am speaking about using the FITB more than a rare color on your quiz-making palette on quizzes in other categories besides Word play. As others have mentioned, I do not mean word play subcategories in other places such as music word play etc.

I am speaking from having made many quizzes here and in fact, many FITB type answers. I've watched over many a quiz of my own as well as those of others.
As I said, if this were a pub quiz with answers said out loud, fine, you could have someone giving a bit of leeway if the answer wasn't quite right. You could make a judgement call as they do on TV programs.
If it were a pencil and paper exam you could say, 'oh well, I suppose that's close enough'.
If it were a typed out quiz and you'd specified the rules, then it would work fairly well, but it isn't. I play on a few of those myself online and live and it's the person who can find the answer and type it in quickly who wins.

It is not a matter of time required to follow up the correction notes for editors, but simply to make a seamless quiz that should not require much attention.

Giving elaborate instructions isn't as successful as all that either. I've seen people give elaborate instructions on an FITB but in general people find that a bit tedious on a reasonably smooth quiz.

Here's another little thing we've found and that Leau just said above. Not just punctuation may play up on your players, but, if you have a two word answer, someone might insert an extra space when they type and not notice as lots of word processors adjust your spacing without you knowing it. If I type in Tom Sawyer and I've typed in Tom Sawyer and not noticed I'll think it's because of capitalization and not the spaces!
It hardly seems fair to mark someone wrong for this yet, it happens a million times a day here.

I enjoy the work of many authors here and would not discourage any author from pursuing something that works well in our template, but, too many FITBs are going to play up on you without your knowing it.

This is my opinion however, but formed over years of practice here as editor, player and author myself.
Remember word play type quizzes are the exception to this rule.

I've been caught by what I think must have been an extra space a couple of times! It IS very peeving lol, when you sit and stare and stare at the answer screen trying to work out WHY your's was wrong when it looks identical. It was only once I started reading here that I realised it probably was an extra space slipping in somewhere.

If it's any consolation Rowena - I've done it myself, and that's despite being the author of several FITB quizzes lol
So - it only goes to prove I guess, that FITB's are indeed prone to inadvertent wrong answers.
Having said that though, I think it is fair to say that the MAJORITY of members who play the brain teasers, which are predominantly FITB, are the kind of players that are more than happy to take their time and really study their answers before submitting. This fact is certainly reflected in the number of compliments I have received for my quizzes - which FAR outweigh the correction notices.

I agree Del, I would think that it's in nature of a Brain Teaser that it requires some thought and time to puzzle the answer out

I have a question - I have a quiz that isn't rated too well, and studying it, I think it's because the very last is a bad FITB question. Can I just change it to Multiple Choice, or do I need to resubmit for an Editor's perusal?

Send a note to the editor to say you are considering changing it and they will hopefully give you their opinion and eventually the nod!

Quiz_Beagle,

As soon as you convert the question from an FITB to mulitple choice, it will automatically knock the quiz offline.

Once you rework the question to a multiple choice question/answer format, simple resubmit the quiz for editor approval.

However, once you submit it, send a note to yourself on the quiz stating that you changed so and so question from a FITB to a multiple choice format. Reason for this is, is that editors look at the notes section of the quiz and by reviewing your note to yourself, editors will know why the quiz is being resubmitted, and therefore, may not have to ask you for clarification as to what was adjusted to the quiz and why it is being resubmitted.

Hope this helps.

I've just come across a quiz with 25 - yes 25 - FITB questions.

Of COURSE I ignored it.

If it was one of Inquizition/Quizzical's extraordinary quizzes you are missing out on a lot of fun and a great brain stretch.

No, it was about newspapers and magazines. The quiztakers are expected to fill in the names in accordance with the clues.
