I have a challenge for you, Stu - I'll race you to 100 quizzes online

Though I think it's safe to say you'd win for quality, if not quantity.

1. Don't be too sure. I do believe you're floating on your own raft of sunnies, friend.

2. No bet. Been really busy, and this Hmong quiz has proven to be a real bear. Just as well - I'm writing it as a exercise for chapter 9.

I frankly don't understand this "campaign" against quiz formats other than the 10-question standard.

There is no "campaign" against quiz formats other than the 10-question standard, nor is there "a strict refusal" to accept 20-question quizzes. Even if the category guidelines indicate a preference for shorter quizzes, the editors will still consider longer quizzes if requested and if they are well written. If a quiz category precludes longer quizzes, there is usually a very good reason for it. However, it is only common sense to check first before one wastes one's time and energy. The problem is very few quiz-makers bother to read the guidelines before plunging into writing their quizzes and then feel slighted when their quiz is rejected (usually for very good reasons).

Quote:

"Personally, I like the 20-question format very much, and I'm sure many other players do, too."

Unfortunately, you are in the minority. It has been our experience, as many others have pointed out before me, that the majority of players prefer the shorter quizzes.

Quote:

"It goes without saying that they absolutely require an appropriate topic and an experienced author."

Unfortunately, most of the 20-Q quizzes are not submitted by experienced authors. The editors are experienced enough to know what works and what doesn't.

Quote:

"I don't think the 20-question format has ever been a disadvantage for my quizzes. All of them have gotten good ratings and very flattering compliments from players as well as from editors. One of them was even ranked no. 1 for several months."

This statement obviously shows that we don't have a policy of "strict refusal" or you wouldn't have such quizzes online.

Quote:

"Judging from your statements, though, it seems now that I've been wrong to think that people enjoyed them.

I fail to see how you came to this conclusion. If players sent you compliments, they obviously enjoyed them. However, in all probability, if you had split them up into shorter quizzes, they would have attained even higher ratings.

Active sludge is actually quite interesting, from a microbiological viewpoint...
I forsee sludge in each category...

Stu, the words Vegemite or Marmite aren't going to show up in this quiz about sludge, are they? Please, tell me it's not so! (Please, please -- don't hit me!)

That would be Sports. Not the way I'm going in that category, though.

Okay Stu, as long as it all becomes digested and put in the landfill, not in my drinking water!

Now that this thread has been totally hijacked, we'll need to blame it on someone.... Maybe Agony, after all, she wrote:

finishing a poorly written one feels like slogging through knee deep sludge

I for one am thoroughly enjoying a sludge discussion. I googled the word "sludge" and was amazed at all the articles, etc. Let us know when the sludge quiz is done Stu -- I've a lot more to learn about the stuff.

Yay for 10 question quizzes! (Just to get back on topic.)

Sometimes, my attention span is "gnat like" and I do well for only short periods.
10 question quizzes are the best!

At the risk of keeping this topic going ad-infinitum, while blitzing my way to the endurance badge I came across several 25q quizzes.
I must say when they are well written, they are a good way of amassing a lot of points in a very short time.

Mind you, the truly gnat sized five question quiz has been eliminated for some time now. (and I don't miss it one bit)

I never like the 5 question quizzes, you take a subject you really like and it is over as soon as it has started.

Well, it's here! The great Stuthehistoryguy's quiz on sludge! 20 question, no less, and tough. Great quiz Stu!

Thanks, mate. Better save the "great", though - as the editors can tell you, I'm hard enough to live with as it is.
