The Nominees.

I am very disappointed that Christina Ricci was not nominated for Black Snake Moan. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about.

I do hope Michael C. Hall pulls out a win for Dexter.

What are your thoughts?

Well, Mr. Stu, I was pretty much NOT surprised by the nominations much (not even Ricci, really ... I think that "big" Awards, in general, seem to hate her, for some reason - which is a shame, too, since she takes nice risky parts in almost everything she does). I was liking the nominations for "Juno", even though I reckon they were expected. It seems the nominations were otherwise mostly more 'mainstream' than I'm used to from the Hollywood Foreign Press (just my opinion, though). They seem to get "bigger"/more lucrative each year, though. One almost NEVER hears them referred to, anymore, without the phrase "pre-cursor to the Oscar nominations" attached. While I haven't seen it, I really like the buzz on "No Country For Old Men". Yay to the Coen boys. I'm sure they had a great laugh yesterday that their Javier Bardem is up in the same category as John Travolta (?). And, honestly! Do ya think that Cate Blanchett could go out and buy a roll of film at the corner Wal-Mart and not get nominated (twice) for doing it? She's very good and all that, but I have to think others were better (especially in the large pool of supporting actresses out there since, I'm just guessing, Jennifer Aniston could play Queen Elizabeth and be up for something for doing so ... so Cate's nod in that category makes sense, I suppose). "Atonement" has awards written all over it, too. Dunno. I've seen none of the films in question (sorry, not even "Hairspray" ... because, in my head, it looks basically annoying and I'm still having trouble with Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer being in the same project ~ and I still miss Ricki Lake, too, etc.) so I can only base my thoughts, so far, on what I've read so much about.
The Globes usually nail the TV categories, too. They seem to highlight smaller and unique not-so-"Friends"-popular things. They went that route this year again, which was cool. But they blew "Ugly Betty" off without a bit of hesitation, eh? I think they do that, though, don't they? Hot new "thing" this year (we can't get enough of you!). Next year, though? Move aside. We're tired, tired, tired of you. And "good luck" to the voters in picking a Best Actress in a Drama Series out of that rich roster of talent! My guess? When in doubt, remember that Sally Field is the cutest 60-year old going. Pick her. And she makes juicy politically incorrect acceptance speeches, too. So much for Kyra, Holly and Glenn. Sigh.

I guess I'm totally in the dark. As for the movies, I've only heard of one of them.... And for the Television drama? At least I've heard of two of them...

So much for my entertainment. But I see Tim Burton directed Sweeney Todd. I might actually have to make time to see that one. (Beetle Juice and Edward Scissorhands are two of my favorite movies. Go figure.)

I haven't been to a movie in a theatre in a couple years, but I am making the effort for Sweeney Todd. It's one of my favorite musicals and, well, it's Tim Burton and Johnny Depp! What more could a somewhat warped girl ask for?!

I met Tim Burton some years ago in a restaurant I used to work at. He's a lot more, um, 'normal' in person. They say tv adds 10 pounds--in his case I guess it adds 10 pounds of weird.

Oh my ! THAT was easily the dreariest, driest (and probably most unnecessary-to-bother-telecasting) Awards show I've ever seen last night. And those two hosts!? The fellow lost me when he equated the collaborative grace/skill, over the years, that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have with that of Martin Scorcese and Leonardo Dicaprio!!!. Um ... I think he meant DeNiro (but who's nitpickin' ?). It certainly was quick, though ... which was good. And (as the Globes always do) alerted this particular viewer to more than a few winners I'd never even heard of and certainly didn't expect to win. Johnny Depp among them - I suspect he deserved it like crazy, but still it was somewhat 'unusual', in a mainstream-ish sense, to choose him over Mr. Hanks (I reckon?). And I'm just a rural sort from Backwoods, Ohio, I know, but I didn't even know there was a film out about Edith Piaf! And then along comes this (lovely, by the looks of it) French actress and wins this major award playing her? Yay to that! Julie Christie was a nice choice, too, I thought (that movie looks terrific as well, in my opinion ... Away From Her, I think it is). And my latest hero, Javier Bardem, looks like he'd better get a presentable tux, a camera-friendly haircut and a well-worded speech ready for Oscar night! Unstoppable at this leg of the journey, I'd say.

Which makes me wonder ... would Hollywood ever stop the Oscar telecast for a "piddly little" writers strike? Let's hope not (typically, the show is endless and more dull than not WITH writers - so what's the problem?). But, really, I'd rather see it cancelled than handled the way that was done last night. Just my summation, however...

I thought the golden globes were ok in who won each award. It seemed as though they were trying to spread the awards around so that both large productions and small ones had awards.
I hated the format though, I definately miss the gala-style show, I suppose it used to make it seem more Hollywood and magical.
I was hoping for Paige to win for best actress as she is from my hometown (well city I guess), and this is the first anyone from here has made it this big for acting.
-Here's hoping the oscars will be more entertaining!
