Well, Mr. Stu, I was pretty much NOT surprised by the nominations
much (not even Ricci, really ... I think that "big" Awards, in general, seem to hate her, for some reason - which is a shame, too, since she takes nice risky parts in almost everything she does). I was liking the nominations for "Juno", even though I reckon they were expected. It seems the nominations were otherwise mostly more 'mainstream' than I'm used to from the Hollywood Foreign Press (just my opinion, though). They seem to get "bigger"/more lucrative each year, though. One almost NEVER hears them referred to, anymore, without the phrase "pre-cursor to the Oscar nominations" attached. While I haven't seen it, I
really like the buzz on "No Country For Old Men". Yay to the Coen boys. I'm sure they had a great laugh yesterday that their Javier Bardem is up in the same category as John Travolta (

?). And, honestly! Do ya think that Cate Blanchett could go out and buy a roll of film at the corner Wal-Mart and not get nominated (twice) for doing it? She's very good and all that, but I have to think others were better (especially in the large pool of supporting actresses out there since, I'm just guessing, Jennifer Aniston could play Queen Elizabeth and be up for something for doing so ... so Cate's nod in
that category makes sense, I suppose). "Atonement" has awards written all over it, too. Dunno. I've seen none of the films in question (sorry, not even "Hairspray" ... because, in my head, it looks basically annoying and I'm still having trouble with Queen Latifah and Michelle Pfeiffer being in the same project

~ and I still miss Ricki Lake, too, etc.) so I can only base my thoughts, so far, on what I've read so much about.
The Globes usually nail the TV categories, too. They seem to highlight smaller and unique not-so-"Friends"-popular things. They went that route this year again, which was cool. But they blew "Ugly Betty" off without a bit of hesitation, eh? I think they do that, though, don't they? Hot new "thing" this year (we can't get enough of you!). Next year, though? Move aside. We're tired, tired, tired of you. And "good luck" to the voters in picking a Best Actress in a Drama Series out of that rich roster of talent! My guess? When in doubt, remember that Sally Field is the cutest 60-year old going. Pick her. And she makes juicy politically incorrect acceptance speeches, too. So much for Kyra, Holly and Glenn. Sigh.
