I keep trying to figure out if new computers still come with A drives.
It's hard to tell when I see them on tv whether it has the A drive.
I've got tons of floppy disks with so many pictures I've been scanning for years for my websites.

They generally still do. And if they don't, it's pretty easy to get a separate A-drive and build it into your PC yourself. Or you could ask the shop where you buy your computer to do it for you. (Or, alternatively, you could copy all contents of your floppy disks to a CD )

I don't know about most of them still having one, Leau, as I bought this one approx. 11 months ago and didn't see ANY new ones that still did. But you're right, Amy could have one addded or better yet, have someone copy them to cds. Sandy

Thanks for all the helpfull information.

Another question I thought of. What type of cd's should I use if I do transfer everything? Here is what I'll be using them for- my websites. I want to be able to add more pictures to them until they are full up like Floppy disks and then if the computer breaks that I've used to save them to with, then would a new one try and format them?

I don't want to run into the same problems I'm running into with transfering things from vcr tapes to DVD's. The problems I'm running into with DVD's is that I now find out that if the DVD player/recorder breaks and I get a new one, the new unit is making me format them before you can do anything with them. Even play them in a different one than the one it was recorded on it. Then you lose everything.

Thanks,
Amy

When I got a new tower about eight months ago, I had the option of adding a floppy drive. There was an extra charge involved, but, at least to me, well worth it.

Most, however, now don't come with a floppy drive, as floppy disks are almost gone.

Hmm, I guess it depends on the place you buy your computer from. I've only ever bought computers from stores that assembled them for you on request, and floppy disk drives have always been and still are an option.

Amy, there are different types of CDs: recordable and rewritable. The recordables you can use only once. You put data on it, and you can't change anything afterwards. The rewritables are more expensive than the recordables, but they're more like your floppy disks. You can overwrite files, add files, and use them multiple times.

I much prefer the CD-R's over the CD-RW's, but each person is different. As Leau says, the rewritables (RW) are exactly that. Each CD holds approximately 700MB of space. In any case, it is advisable NOT to go more than 675MB per disk. The outer edge is easily scratched, and can become unreadable.

If I use a CD-RW, it'd be for something work-related right now.

You could also use a USB. I saw a gigabyte for $18 the other day, so they can come quite cheap.

And though they are a bit more expensive (like about $300-$400) you might keep your eye out for a terabyte (1,000 gigabytes) that would just plug into a USB port. If you have a whole lot of pictures it might be handy. That being said, I'm really a novice with these things, but it it's a gadget, I'm all for it!

I suppose in the not too far future (if not already) computers will be coming with a terabyte standard.

The Friday ad from Fry's (a computer store) had a 1TB hard disk for a lot less than I imagined.
