Secondhand books I buy from the library as they sell off discontinued stock. I work next door to a department store book department which it very useful, I use it as a short-cut through to the main shopping street and cannot resist having a quick browse on my way through - this leads to impulse purchases. I also buy at the airport (close to home), the newsagent and the local department store.

Ah...as I mentioned in the previous thread of this nature...I prefer to acquire my books via several used book stores in the Berkeley area, namely Moe's, Shakespeare Books and Half-price Books. These three stores have fantastic collections, mostly due to the fact that they are located right off the Berkeley campus. Sometimes, if I must, I purchase books from the university bookstore, but I find these places really don't offer the best deal to students. Anyone else have alternative sources for books? (Feel free to repost if you original post went down with the sinking ship that was the original thread!)

Lol Lady Cate!
A great place to get books is E-bay but much much better is Half.com I have been able to find just about everything I want at this site. Usually priced even lower than my local used book store. The delivery fee is small, and it works out much better than driving to the store. I have found many out of print chess books that I tried for years to acquire. The first time I went to the site I was looking for a particular hardback gift book for a friend. I fully expected to pay around 50 bucks. I couldn't find it at any of the retail sites, but I found a copy in excellent shape at Half.com The price was 77 cents plus 2 dollars shipping. Needless to say, I now buy all my books there.

Ingram Book Company, my hubby gets me a discount and I can get lots of out of print books and get many early pre-released books (especially children's books).

P.S. Great children's book for teaching jazz: "Looking For Bird In the Big City" by Robert Burleigh. Illustrated by: Marek Los. Harcourt Children's Press, May 2001.

Mine come from everywhere; from the mall to the library. My favorite place is this little shop close to my house. They've got this barrel of books that are kind of beat-up in the back for 10 cents each! (Don't tell anyone though, more for me!)

At the local thrift store, they have no idea what books are worth. I got ten Shakespeare plays for a dollar. Also, I find some strange stuff there, like the official Preppie handbook.

When I was a supervisor at Barnes and Noble I purchased all of my reading material there (nice discount). now I browse through there, get ideas and what's new, and GO TO THE LIBRARY!! IT'S FREE!! Also, we have a local store called "The Paperback", where you can take in your old ones for credit/others. You can get about 20 paperbacks for around $10. Unfortunately in this town we don't really have any fun/cat in the window/nifty coffee bar bookstore ('cept B&N, that's as close at it comes). Maybe I'll open one. My cat is very social.

I am a regular library Bag lady-get a BIG bag every time I go! I also am blessed with a brother-in-law who buys and hands his books on to me. I love the library sales, and when the churches, hospital, etc. has garage sales, I buy from them. I get books as gifts, too, and will buy at booktores, if can't find used.

Anywhere and everywhere! Novels I try to read from our great local library - (volunteer run English library which charges a small membership fee so it can buy new books several times a year) - I also buy books from there that come up for sale. We get a lot of donations of books (I'm a volunteer, so I can say 'we') so often have duplicates that go in the for sale bin.
My family all know that books are always a safe thing to give me for a gift, preferably non-fiction, history being most preferred.
Many bars/shops/charities here have second-hand books for sale, so I always check these out, and because I am seldom seen without a book in my hand or pocket, people are always loaning me books (which I do my darndedst to return promptly!!)
On my annual visit to England I do a bookstore crawl in East Grinstead, where I used to live, always come back to Spain with a VERY heavy suitcase. I have also purchased via mail order (usually from specialist military history dealers) in the past, and have dipped into internet purchasing a wee bit. Have yet to buy anything from eBay but may give it a try soon.

I get most of my books from our mobile library van which comes around once every two weeks. We can borrow as many books as we wish and the selection is awesome. Our librarian is tops. He will get you any book you want without even being given the author!WhenI buy books I get them from Readers' Digest or from my nearest bookstore(eighty miles away)I get the Condensed Books from Digest and buy any books by Ian Rankin who is the best Scottish Author around just now.

Here's a great place: 1bookstreet.com Why? Free shipping if you buy over $20! I found this place when I needed to buy a bunch of books for my history class. The problem with half.com and amazon.com in getting used books is sometimes they cost as much as a regular new book at a bookstore after shipping. But if you save up or get together with some friends you can get free shipping at 1bookstreet (plus the prices are great).

I also sell my old books from classes at half.com and amazon.com - they give me more than the bookstore.

Also good places to shop: Barnes and Noble (they'll order books for you) and Waldenbooks - especially if you know someone who has the discount card there.

Pinfire, I order books from Amazon all the time! Amazon is dangerous for me because their computer keeps track of your preferences, so every time you log on it has a list of books it thinks you'll like.. and of course I have to buy them.. I am a real book hog. I buy so many I can't read them fast enough! I get most of them online, such as Amazon, Ebay, Barnes and Noble, and half.com. I also make the rounds of the used book stores around here once in a while. Flea markets are great too, as many people just want to get rid of stuff and you can get some really great treasures dirt cheap. - Debby

We have this really great chain of bookstores here called Half Price Books (I think they are a national chain) I love this place! I bought a huge stack of books there for $20.00. They have new and used books. If I really want a book and they don't have it in, I'll go to Border's or Amazon. I've bought a few things from Amazon and they ship out pretty fast.

My problem is, I never get rid of a book I've read. So, I've got this Library or Congress sized book collection going. My bookshelf groans every time I come within ten paces, the poor thing needs to be reinforced.

Pinfire ... I use Doubleday as well at times, I'll order over the net but not pay as I have a healthy distrust of giving out my Visa details. [Smile]

I buy my books from Dymocks. It's just down the street from where I work, and they have a really good literature section...

...they also gave me a card because I buy so many books, so I get discounts & stuff...

I just love buying second hand books, I usually hunt in old car boot sales, or in second hand and charity shops, to me there is nothing like a well read book (as long as it's not falling apart). Also I love a site called www.booklovers.co.uk which is full of all kinds of wonderful treasures

Lately I've had to buy more new though because it seems there are less people parting with their books these days, which is a shame for me, I have to read a new book about 10 times to get it to have that 'loved" look

Trouble is, I love my books so much, I never throw them away and I am quickly running out of room, guess I'll have to sell the bed next. Hmmm....

An excellent source for high quality used books is:

http://www.abebooks.com

Their inventory is vast; it includes books from all over the world; the service is excellent; the prices are good.

Give it a try.

I used to live about 6 miles from a discount book store that gave credit on any books/magazines you brought in...*sigh* I miss that place. Another place I like is the Literary Guild- it's a club like Columbia House, but you get 4 books to start and commit to buying 2 in the next 2 years, plus you get points every time you buy a book so it works out that you get every 5th book free.

I live in Brisbane, Australia. One of the charities here, Life Line do an annual book fest and sell off donated books. Everything is in category and placed on tables. It's a bit of a lottery but very cheap. There are acres upon acres of books.

I'm there an hour before opening on the first day, rehearsing my best intellectual hippy look to fit in with the crowd. The doors open and WHAM! It's like the Boxing Day sale in a department store. Survival of the fittest!

I can buy a years reading in one morning for about $50. It's really cyclic. When I have finished the books, I donate them back then have another dig at the next bookfest. A great thing and a good cause.

Well, a large number I inherited through my father, who acquired a great many, often through ordering series (Great Books, Time Life, etc.). I used to buy at Used Bookstores, but not so much anymore. Often what I want can't be found there, or not in good shape. Also, since w/ my Discover card I get double cash back in Borders gift certificates, I buy most of my books there now! Last year, I eneded up wiht $280 in coupons ($140 cash back doubled when exchanged for gift certificates). I acquire many books as gifts. I am really trying to reign in my book buying impulses. I must read five books I haven't touched for everyone I buy. That's what I say, anyway, though I often break my own rule.
