I'm trying to get into a chatroom and I keep getting a box. At the top it says Internet Explorer Security Warning and then here is what it says inside the box:
Windows has found a problem with this file
Name: msnchat45.cab
Publisher: Unknown Publisher
Then it says
This file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher

Also, what version of Internet Explorer are you using?

You can find out by going to HELP > ABOUT in the Internet Explorer toolbar.

Ok Amy.

The best thing to do is use your Windows Update and update Windows. In order to use Internet Explorer 7.0, you first have to have Windows XP Service Pack 2.0.

So go to Windows Update and update your machine. It will also update Internet Explorer to version 7.

To get to Windows Update, click on START > PROGRAMS, and you should see Windows Update near the top of the list.

Chances are, after updating (you will most likely require a reboot), Sparkpea chat will work again.

If it doesn't, post up again and we'll continue to troubleshoot.

I do have Service Pack 2 already.

When my brother-in-law who works with computers was over here during the holidays, he was trying to help with some of the computer problems. He said not to update IE to version 7 because of problems people keep having after doing that. He even had a problem and knows others.

I do know others who can get in the chat with using IE 6

I highly recommend IE 7.

But anyway, let's stick with IE 6 since you're comfortable with it.

What we're going to do is:

Go into Internet Explorer > TOOLS > OPTIONS.

You should get the Internet Properties screen.

Go to the GENERAL tab and in the BROWSING HISTORY area, look for a button for SETTINGS.

Once in there, look for the Downloaded Program Files section. In there you will see an item named 'MSN Chat Control'.

Remove that item, close Internet Explorer, restart it, and then re-visit SparkPea and re-download the MSN Chat applet.

That should work. If it doesn't, we can go about it another way.

I don't seem to have a Browsing History area. I went in like you said. Clicked on Tools and then went to Internet Options is the only thing with Options that I have listed under tools.

I do have a section that says History, but the only thing there is a button that says Clear History

Hmmm I need to remember what the options screen in Internet Explorer 6 looked like.

Look in the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES section for a SETTINGS button. Click it.

On the next screen, click on the VIEW OBJECTS button.

That's where you will find the MSN Chat item to delete it.

After deleting it, click on OK to exit out of those screens, close IE6, restart it, then revisit SparkPea to redownload the chat applet.

Ok, I'm in there. But don't seem to see MSN Chat listed anywhere in the list.

There are just 8 things listed and a couple of things say Damaged next to them.
The things that say Damaged are
{9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F}

and the other thing with Damaged is Symantec Antivirus Scanner

You should see an item listed:

Downloaded Program Files or something like that. Double click it.

In there you should find the MSN Chat Control.

As for the other damaged items, I wouldn't recommend deleting them. If anything, it might be a good indication that an upgrade to IE7 is in order.

I'm looking around the only thing that happens when I click View Objects is the list that I just mentioned I found.
It does also say at the top
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files

But nothing in there says MSN Chat Control.

What does it mean though about the things that are Damaged?

I'm about to go away for an extended weekend so I won't be able to reply until Sunday night the earliest.

I'm not sure why the MSN Chat Control is not showing up in the View Objects area. This could be perhaps why you are having problems with it; it is so corrupted your system doesn't even recognize it's installed.

As for the other damaged items, I wouldn't delete all of them. Some of them may be necessary and deleting them could cause more problems than you currently have. Short of being there in front of your system, there's only so much I can do from this side of the monitor.

The last thing I can think of to try (short of upgrading to IE 7.0) is to do this:

Download a new msnchat45.cab from Microsoft at this link:

http://fdl.msn.com/public/chat/msnchat45.cab

Once you have the file, open it up and extract them to C:\Windows\System

That should work.

I would first like to thank you for all the help with things.

One thing I just did, a search on my computer for msnchat45.cab
by going to start and then search and typed it in and it couldn't find it.
So, looks like I don't even have it on my computer at all.
I'll see if downloading it again helps.

I wouldn't be surprised though if things are corrupted or even deleted. Been having computer problems for the past few years ever since this MBKWBar Toolbar came through the same day I got AIM for an online computer class at the college here. The toolbar had installed itself in IE and kept causing me to get flooded with popups.
Due to my health not doing well, these computer problems cause so much stress. So, my mom has been trying to help deal with alot of it too by calling repairmen and looking around online and stuff for help on things.
This one repaiman we had been using and definitly not going to use him anymore due to things he messed up and stuff last time he came keeps saying not to use IE at all if I don't want to get hit with viruses/spyware all that stuff anymore.
So, I prefer to use Netscape for things that I can and then sites that wont work with Netscape then I have to use IE.
He had also installed Mozilla but keeps getting hit with things coming through there. On the last few scans I keep doing with spybot keeps showing things are coming through Mozilla.

Like I mentioned in one of my other posts my brother-in-law who works with computers was trying to help with my computer problems. Of course, with so many things going on and then things he found the repairman screwed up on, he did as much as he could do with the time he was over for. He definitly said not to use the repairman anymore. His suggestion is to get help from computer help forums.
Plus it costs alot of money to have a repairman come out.
He also of course said not to upgrade to IE 7. Due to all the problems he had and others he knows had too. Then I did look around on that Download site-www.download.com and after reading things on there, it makes me even more scared to upgrade. One thing someone had to reformat the whole harddrive after the upgrade due to the problems it caused.
I don't even know if I have enough room for IE 7 either. That's one of the other big problems I'm having is ever since getting Bellsouth DSL, my computer keeps going so slow and I can't use my scanner anymore due to CPU usage going up to 100%
and keep getting messages about an error with NTVDM.EXE causing a problem.
The Bellsouth installation cd did install all this spyware too. My nephew is the one who put it all on my computer because him and his Dad were getting the stuff set up and wiring our house to do the wired internet from my computer to mom's in Garage. So, had to go through the attic.

This doesn't seem to be working. I'm trying to download the file and it stopped and gave me this error:
Internet Explorer cannot download msnchat45.cab from fdl.msn.com
The connection with the server was reset.

Still can't get it to work.

I'm not sure why Amy. I just tried downloading that file and it worked fine.

Right click on the link and select 'Save Target As...'

Finally, it worked.

Did you try installing it and then revisiting the chat site? Is it working?
