Taliban - The Story of the Afghan Warlords by Ahmed Rashid. What can I say? If you suffer from insomnia and need something to make you fall asleep it will be a good investment. Actually it is quite interesting although I am currently only on page 82 (I keep falling asleep when I read it), I have learned enough not to give peace much hope in that country no matter who rules. Come what may I will finish the book even if it takes a month, at least I will be guaranteed a lot of good nights sleep without resorting to the lavender oil [ 12-23-2001: Message edited by: sue943 ]

.... such a good book (put this on your list): The Shadowed Path by Ross Merren. This is a historical novel, that seems very close to how it was....... It is the first of a trilogy about the life of a country doctor 200 years ago. It is set around the Romney Marshes in Kent. It is exciting and interesting .. I am not able to put it down for long.

A wonderful book and the start of a trilogy: "The Shadowed Path"by Ross Merren ... so well researched and so well told. I am loving it. I am recommending it again. [ 12-28-2001: Message edited by: ren33 ]

I'm reading Voices From Cemetery Hill The Civil War Diary of Col. William Henry Asbury Speer (1861-1864), by Allen Paul Speer. He was the commander of the 28th Regiment NC Troops during the American Civil War. I guess because I had family who fought on both sides, and my oldest brother's hobby is the Civil War, I have a great interest in it. Especially how people from North Carolina lived, and were effected by the war.

Among the books I'm reading are three American classics: Herman Melville's immortal "Moby Dick" (last year was the 150th anniversary of its publication), Sarah Orne Jewwtt's "Country of the Pointed Firs" (she's still overshadowed by Stephen King, to many the ONLY Maine author!) and Walter Van Tilburg Clark's "The Ox-Bow Incident", to me THE Great American Western! (I also have the movie version with Henry Fonda in my collection). tjoeb};>

Wow, I just spotted ProfChallenger's reply to this thread a ways back and I have to concur with him/her that "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" is an absolutely intruiging and compelling read. I have read it about six or seven times. Admittedly, certain portions of the book seem a little weak in their support for very deafingly loud claims, but overall, it's a great idea and there is enough evidence to seriously make one question the integrity of the Catholic Church. I believe the books are based on a BBC mini-series from the 70's and early 80's.

A Biography on Miles Davis. He was a strange, enigmatic person. His music was wonderful but I'm afraid the jury is out on Miles as a person.

I am reading Cradle of Death by John Glatt. The book is about Marie Noe's murder of 8 of her 10 infants from the 1940's to the 1950's. She claimed that they died while in their cribs. It was recently found out that she murdered them. Also, I am re-reading Growing Up Brady: I Was A Teenage Greg by Barry Williams.

Currently reading "English Passengers" by Matthew Kneale which I was given as a Christmas present after it appeared several times in one of those lists of recommended books in the Sunday papers. It's a fictional work about a vicar from England sailing to Tasmania in the 1850's to find the Garden of Eden which he believes is located there. Really challenging stuff about religious beliefs, the treatment of the aborigines by the British colonists, and extreme racial theories. Also very funny and an excellent read. Bill
p.s. I always feel I have to plug "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" by Louis de Bernieres which I'm now reading for the third time. Brilliant. [ 01-16-2002: Message edited by: jigsawbill ]

Just got done with the Ian Irvine book 'A Shadow on the Glass'. Now have moved on to 'Necroscope' by Brian Lumley. Irvine is an Aussie...I don't suppose anyone down under can find a copy of 'The View from the Mirror' saga? and maybe send one my way...the American publishers are notoriously slow at publishing stuff up here.

To Dakota North I too have read all Jean Auels books and have been waiting best part of 10 years for the 5th to come out. Many rumours around as to why is hasn't appeared yet e.g. she's dead, has writers block etc. I have now given up all hope but if you find anything different please let me know.

Am currently reading the Alan Clark Diaries. Very entertaining but a constant reminder as to why I will never vote Conservative. I'll get off my soapbox now. Have also just finished Ben Elton's new novel 'Dead Famous'. Another very entertaining book although perhaps not as good as some of his earlier works...

I tried to start at Lord of the Rings yesterday, I went to see the movie twice, have already read till page 600 two years ago, but I would like to know the whole story and how it ends, so I decided I will read it again. So there I was, the book in my hands, and I saw that there were multiple appendices. So what did I do? I started reading the appendices. I hope to start reading the story tonight...

I too am reading Lord of the Rings (although The Two Towers) but i will have to admit to being a bit masochistic for i am also reading (in no particular order) Emma, Trainspotting, Beowulf, and Undiscovered Self by Jung plus my regular books for class. Can you believe I still have a life on top of it all? It's friday....so make sure everyone downs a few pints before returning to books!

I'm the knid of person who won't read for months, but will then read about five books at once. The second is true at the moment. The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams which I read about once every two months! But, I'm also reading Murder At The Vicarage by Agatha Christie and The Long, Dark Teatime Of The Soul by Douglas Adams! There might be others! Even I forget! By the way, Beowolf is very good!

I just finished reading Anastasia Has The Answers by Lois Lowry and a biography of Sudaka Sasaki, the girl from Japan who made the paper birds when she was in the hospital with the "atom bomb" illness. I'm now reading The Battle For The Castle by Elizabeth Winthrop.

Well, I'm in the middle of the Lord of the Rings, part one. No surprises there, huh?
