Oh, my poor, dear glenn. It turns out you have discovered the only people on the web who find this much joy in their toilets! I do hope you don't think we have all gone mad! (As true as that may be, we usually try to keep a cover on it!) All I know is that I've got clockwise here. (And I didn't even have to double check, because as I said before, excited about my toilet!)

It was on the radio recently (probably Questions Questions on BBC radio 4 or Dr Karl's science questions on radio 5), and the answer was that the direction simply depends on the shape of the toilet bowl or plughole whichever location you put it in.
They tested loads of them, worked out the equations and can now explain the performance of each one in advance from the design.

By the way, a new quiz sub category of toilets and toilet paper was created following my last toilet quiz. I'd really like a special badge if that was possible, but there'd only be a few of us with it!

And what sort of design and title were you thinking might be suitable for that badge, I wonder.

A toilet or possibly a toilet roll. I dread to think of the alternatives!

I'm honestly not taking a pop but they do say it takes one to know one/birds of a feather flock together etc.

It's too late cmt, you're already one of us. Just surrender to it and enjoy.

I have happened on this topic rather late and must add that the direction of the water swirl is a chain reaction in older toilets. As far as the badge is concerned could I suggest a toilet duck with a u-bend sinister?

so to be really boring.. (lol or otherwise, depends how you look at it, this stuff fascinates me) Coriolis effect (caused by rotation of the earth) does NOT work in small scale.. (though it was always fun as a kid to watch the little whirlpool in the bath from all angles)
It DOES work with huge masses of air .. I love those satellite photos showing gorgeous big spiral cloud formations and even though I know they're trouble for anyone underneath (hurricanes!) they're still very beautiful from space.. like cream on a cup of coffee or a spiral galaxy.
By the way, the apparent rotation of such a spiral cloud mass is actually the OPPOSITE of its actual rotation.. just to confuse the issue:)
Can a hurricane from the south hemisphere meet one from the southern and what would happen?
I don't believe this is possible because of wind direction patterns.. they'll generally tend to move AWAY from the equator and won't cross it. I don't know if there have been exceptions (or could be) but I learn something new every day....
