The following is an excerpt from a news item on the BBC News website under the headline "Giant knickers put out house fire"...

"A family home was saved from burning down when a pair of giant knickers were used to put out a fire.

Jenny Marsey's size 18-20 cotton pants were a lifesaver when they were grabbed to cover a frying pan fire at her home in Meryl Gardens, Hartlepool, Teesside." BBC News item

Well excuse me but 16 is the average size of women - this being the US size 14. How dare they call size 18 pants 'giant'. Quite honestly I am more than peeved about this and feel like complaining to the Beeb.

Er, I take that size!

I have emailed the BBC -

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tees/7167549.stm

I take great exception to the use of the word 'giant' to describe size 18/20 knickers. The average size of women is about size 16 so to refer to those slightly larger than average as to having giant backsides is offensive and insulting.

I take that size myself.

I find that insulting but not particulary suprising. I wear men's jeans myself, they are more comfortable. Finding anything in the women's department that would be comfortable and look good is nearly impossible as they tend to carry sizes 0-5. What aobut the 98% that are bigger than that? Oh well. Did the BBC respond to your letter?

Here in America, that type of description in any reporting would not be tolerated, and probably edited even before it hit our airwaves.

If it made the news at all. It probably would have been a 20 sec story on the local news about a small housefire.

As insulting as I agree that is, I must admit that it has given me a bit of a chuckle. Just hope I don't split my giant knickers laughing in such poor taste.

Wrong!

This is now global ground-breaking news - articles in press in Sydney, Canada and France plus 128 other UK and international references, including USA - here

The descriptions vary from Big Knickers to Roly-poly Mum's knickers with everything imaginable in between - Giant, Extra-large, Outsize, Over-sized, Giant Pants, Billowing, Size XL Underpants etc.

All I can say is, the lady concerned must have a very small frying pan ....

I think that taken out of context, it could be considered insulting. I did note, however, that the lady in question refers to them herself as "parachute knickers", and compares them to a 1m x 1m fire blanket.

Obviously this lady is just taking it all in her stride and is having a bit of a giggle at herself. If we can't laugh at ourselves, who can we laugh at, eh?

Agreed, it IS funny to think of a fire being put out with knickers, and yes I did laugh too. I would love to see the faces of the BBC staff when they read the protests about their description.

My personal name for the said item is my bucket drawers.

This is "Fun Trivia", so, I don't think you need to take it quite so seriously.
I think its a hoot!

Um, how do I say this? What would the males do if it was a fire put out by a "grown man's size 26 waist underwear, indicating a "possibly smaller than usual occupancy" of said knickers"???? Would there be a protest by the man for insulting his maleness in quite the opposite way? Don't even ask me where in my sick little mind that came from. It just, umm, popped up! Sandy

I happen to wear Men's Small Briefs, because of my 31 inch waist, but that doesnt necessarily equate with the equipment said undies are concealing.

We just need to be comfortable with what we have and not allow the opinions of others to upset us.

Clearly, it is a slow news day here in downtown Brisbane.

This same newsworthy article was just mentioned on the radio station news on Triple M FM.

It's a shame no-one thought to get some more advertising dollars by getting a manufacturer to put their ad on afterwards!

When I saw this, I was thinking size 32/34+, not 18. I've seen people that take a size 20/22 that aren't "giant."

I'm in Hartlepool (yes, I have the 'pleasure' of living there lol and we do seem to have made an awful lot of dubious news this past year ) and the knickers in question were anything but giant! They were pictured in all their glory on the front page of our local paper, being waved by the owners son - it was NOT a pretty sight, and whilst large, they weren't giant or enormous, and, given the size of my own unmentionables and the size of the people one sees toddling round town every day, could even be called middling!
All I can say it that it must have been a very small chip pan, and they were extremely lucky to be here to laugh about it, given that they first threw water on it!

All the best sturdy knickers are from Marks & Spencer.

I just keep thinking it was a good job she wasn't wearing them at the time.

Oh, dear, I shouldn't laugh, but really ....

Must have been a very slow news day at the BBC.

I'm posting only because I'm sort of curious: I haven't seen numerically-sized panties (or underpants/underwear, to use our terms) in the U.S. in ages. Here, we seem to prefer the "small," "medium," "large" designations, and I suppose there must be an "extra-large" size out there. Can any U.S. players tell me whether they still buy underwear according to numbered sizes? If so, what are the sizes available?

Women's knickers (underwear in the US) are sized by number. Men's are sized by small, medium and large.

At least they are in Philadelphia.

Mine just say size 5. Trigger, I was saying that in jest and certainly hope you took no offense to it. You did somewhat reinforce my point though, by defending the "size vs occupancy" theory. Sandy

I've seen both, at least in Canada. And it tends to really depend on the manufacturer... I've gotten horribly confused while underwear shopping when one company's size 9-10 is basically equal to jeans size 9 or 10, and another company's size 9 is 5XL.
