I'd add

The Dam Busters (a personal favourite)
Paths of Glory
The Bridge (a German film)
Stalingrad (also German)
Sink the Bismarck!
In Which We Serve
Gallipoli
The Lighthorsemen
The Red Badge of Courage
Joyeux Noel

and probably quite a few more. "The Great Escape" is high on my list, but you've already mentioned it. Same with "Casablanca".

I preferred "Letters from Iwo Jima" to "Flags of Our Fathers", but they're both worth watching.

I should be ashamed of myself for interrupting these excellent (and serious) listings of films ... but I just have to mention "M*A*S*H" and "Stripes". Oh, and also the totally serious "Coming Home" (which, I guess, was technically a 'post-war' movie?)...

Could we call "Cold Mountain" a war movie? And, in the same vein in one way though years apart in everything else, "Shenandoah".

No, different films. I love "Tunes of Glory" too, but don't think of it as a war film as all of the conflict revolves around the John Mills and Alec Guinness characters. I'm not even sure it is set in wartime, is it?

"Paths of Glory" is Stanley Kubrick's gem about the court martial of French soldiers after the mutinies late in WWI. Suppose it is really an anti-war film.

And yes, I'd count "Shenandoah" (another one I like) and "Cold Mountain" (which I haven't seen).

I thought in the beginning we meant strictly 'battle oriented ' movies, but that's what I get for thinking inside the box.

Cold Mountain is really fine, though supremely hard to watch in parts, along with Gone With the Wind and Casa Blanca. Since You Went Away is another nice effort.
Now that I have adjusted my mindset, there are more good war movies than I can count.

I'm not big into war movies, personally. But if we're talking about movies where war figures centrally to the characters, rather than ones where the bulk of the plot centers around combat, then:

Gone with the Wind
Born on the Fourth of July
African Queen
Empire of the Sun
Jacob's Ladder

Of combat movies

All Quiet on the Western Front (the old one of course)

Other movies that spring to mind (or miniseries as well)

Hornblower (maybe it's crazy, but I love this miniseries)
Last of the Mohicans
The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (thats the one with Milla Jovovich)
Memphis Belle
Windtalkers
Wargames (OK, it's cold war, maybe not war war)
And yes, Good Morning Vietnam.

Apart from the great 'classics' that were already mentioned, another great (in my opinion) war movie is "To End All Wars ".
It's a true story from WWII and I'd honestly recommend it to anybody. It's cruel but "different" in a very good way, I'd say.

I liked Soldaat van Oranje (English title I believe is Soldier of Orange) and Un long dimanche de fiançailles. A film I've heard a lot of good things about but that I've never seen is Dresden, a German TV film.

"Saving Private Ryan" ....gets me every time at the end where he asks his wife to tell him he's led a good life.

Just thought of another good one: "Operation Daybreak" (1975). Based on a true story. Set in World War II. A squad of Czech expatriates are parachuted into Czechoslovakia in order to assassinate the German governor Reinhard Heydrich, the likely heir-apparent after Hitler. Not a great movie but WWII buffs would like it.

I'd like to add the HBO series 'Band of Brothers' to the list.

It's based off the book by the same name from Stephen Ambrose.

If you haven't seen this series, I highly recommend purchasing the DVD box set. It's one of those that you'll get your moneys' worth out of. I rewatch the entire series bi-annually.

We Were Soldiers springs to mind and so does Gallipoli. I think they both star Mel Gibson. We Were Soldiers is based on the Vietnam War.

Oh! I just thought of another great one (that I don't think's been mentioned yet?): Friendly Persuasion in 1956.
