This story I have read over and over again. The tears flowed from my eyes when I read this story. I don't have children but I can't imagine waking up to an awful tragedy such as what happened in this case. A two year old wanders out on a very cold night and the Mom found him dead in a snowbank. Such awful news. My thoughts and prayers are with this family in such a difficult time.

It is a terrible thing, trevor. Unfortunately, it happens every year-somewhere. We had the normal dead bolt lock, plus, a heavy duty chain up at the top of the door. Even I had to get a step to reach it.

The thing is, you must use common sense. If you make it too difficult to get out, what happens in a fire?

Very sad, indeed. I hope the investigation shows only a tragic accident.

I used to work in an old people's home and one winter one of the residents "got out" somehow, through a fire door, which obviously couldn't be locked on the inside, it swung shut and latched behind her, and she died of hypothermia before she was found.
She was missing for at most, 1 hour and 45 minutes, as bed checks were 2 hourly.
It was cold but not 'that' cold, but she wasn't dressed for the outside, and was frail, and just froze.
It is so sad when something like that happens

Rowena and Veronik, as you said, we always will continue to come across these sad stories even with precautions in place. Thanks to both of you for responding to this.
