How is it showing? A pop-up? Does anything show up in a spyware scan?

I wonder if it's a Windows Messenger type of message box. Any chance of a link to a screenshot of what you are seeing? Does the box still appear if you disable JavaScript in Firefox? Have any extensions recently been installed that could be tied to the start of the trouble? Try starting Firefox in it's 'Safe Mode' (shortcut in the Start Menu) to see if the problem persists. Perhaps create a new Profile for experimental purposes and start Firefox using it.
Sorry for all the questions. They are all fairly quick things to check that might help.

Mochyn, CasaleMedia is malware that installs without your consent and it's an online advertising network. It produces tracking cookies and pop-up ads and can also install other types of spyware/adware. That's why your Firefox is blocking all the pop ups. Apparently, it has attached itself to your Firefox, but not in Explorer, as it is harder for the program to get by Explorer, which has better built in tracking cookie blocking. It is, unfortunately, difficult to uninstall. If you type in CasaleMedia and do a search, you will find more info on this. The uninstall is pretty complicated unlesss you know what you are doing, because you have to deal with some sensitive files. There are relatively cheap and very safe ways to remove it if you can't do it yourself or don't have a friend that can. I took it off someone's computer, but would not want to walk you through it becuause you need to go into your Registry Editor. That can be risky business at best. Try the online search or, if you know someone you trust, have them take it off. I hope this helped. Sandy

Mochyn, Try removing your cookies in FireFox: Tools > Options > Privacy > Clear Now (Select which items you want to clear...try starting out with just cookies). This will clear your cookies. Hopefully you remember all your passwords because after the clearing, you will have to relogin to websites. If you are reluctant to do that, you can manually delete the CasaleMedia cookies in FireFox (go to the same area but click the SHOW COOKIES button and delete the CasaleMedia cookies). However, I recommend downloading AT LEAST two of these free programs and letting them handle malware, adware, and spyware: Spybot Search and Destroy; http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.htmlAdAware 2007; http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.phpSuper Anti Spyware Free Edition; http://www.superantispyware.com/download.htmland Windows Defender <Genuine Validation required>; http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspxI personally use SpyBot, Super AntiSpyware, and Windows Defender on ALL of my machines, in addition to Kaspersky AntiVirus and have no problems. I would recommend downloading SpyBot and Ad-Aware to start, let them do their full scans, and let them auto-clean your system. Good luck!

Dan (Daboosh), Would it make a difference with the Windows Defender as to what type of OS mochyn is using? I know one of the requirements is 'Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1' or later. I guess what I am asking is are you able to install it outside of those parameters? You are knowledgable on these things and I have a friend I would like to see add this, but she is having trouble because of Windows server 2002. I thought you might know a way around this? Sandy

Mochyn - Did you try removing your FireFox cookies? As opposed to IE, FireFox stores it's cookies in files. So if you delete the actual cookie files for casalemedia, it should fix the problem. Try checking out the 'Show Cookies' option in FireFox and give a quick scan through the list for casalemedia cookies, then delete them. If that doesn't work, I would recommend downloading HiJackThis and posting the report that the program generates. Using the resultant report, we can track down exactly where casalemedia is hiding and work on getting rid of it. Here's a short tutorial on HiJackThis. All you need to be concerned with is downloading, installing, and then generating a report and pasting the contents of the report here. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.htmlSandy - I'm not aware of any operating system called Windows Server 2002. Do you mean Windows Server 2000 or 2003? Unless maybe she has Windows Content Manager Server 2002? You CAN install Windows Defender on, say, a Server 2000 based system but you need to download a platform SDK redistrutable from Microsoft and manually copy some files. If you can confirm the exact operating system she is using, I can give you the steps to pass along to her.

Sorry, My bad, Dan, I typed 2002 instead of "2000" and didn't notice it! No wonder the confusion. She is definitely using the standard Windows 2000 OS. I would greatly appreciate the steps for installing Defender. Thanks. Sandy

This should work Sandy: 1. Download the Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://tinyurl.com/73zuw Important: When you download the Ggdiplus_dnld.exe file, click Save, and then save the file to the desktop. 2. Double-click the Ggdiplus_dnld.exe file, and then click Yes to agree to the Microsoft Software License Terms. 3. When you are prompted, unzip all the files to the desktop. To do this, click Browse, double-click Desktop, and then click Unzip. 4. Manually copy the Gdiplus.dll file from the desktop to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. Try to install Windows Defender. Let me know how your friend fared.
