The thread then moved on to discuss valid reasons. If you READ my subsequent posts (particularly the one to Sandy) you will see that I agree that there are often good reasons why the toilet seat should be left up - in the case of safety with a young child, or to facilitate ease of use for a disabled person - by implication THAT INCLUDES YOU SUE!

You WRONGLY made the assumption that I was attacking you - that is an INSULT - and I stand by my comment regarding the hypocrisy of your post.

Now can we get back to the subject of the flushing/non-flushing of a tissue after nose blowing.

Thank you.

Those of you who followed the other thread concerning the Etiquette quiz may recall that the answer to the question about leaving the toilet lid up or down was that the correct etiquette was to leave the lid down.

Personally I would have thought it was to leave the lid up - simply because the next poor soul to use the facility may be in a rush and not have enough time to prop it up themselves, particularly if they are suffering from something like gastroenteritis.

Having said that, I like to leave it down so that when the toilet is flushed, it doesn't spray bacteria all over the room. When I was studying biology at university we did a study on this. If you place marked bacteria in a toilet, then flush it, you can subsequently detect the marked bacteria all over the room. In a typical bathroom, that means on the soap, on the counter, under the shampoo bottles, on your toothbrush...!

This is also one of the reasons why I prefer the old Australian style of housing (the toilet being located in a small separate room specifically for that purpose) over the American style of housing (toilet located within the bathroom). (Not meaning to digress but this is one of the reasons why there is confusion over the terminology. Americans asking for the bathroom in Australia will often be directed to the wrong room ).

Sorry, but I can just imagine the Secretary General of the United Nations saying something like that!

Sorry, I did digress after all, didn't I?

Okay, to answer the original question, I don't see anything wrong with tossing a used tissue in the loo.

Because of our severe water shortage, I wouldn't expect anyone to flush the toilet just for a tissue.

In our case, one ordinary tissue on top of the usual amount of toilet tissue would not cause a plumbing problem with flushing.

In fact, the water shortage is such an issue here that we have a saying, "if it's brown, flush it down, if it's yellow, let it mellow", and we do.

I know it probably sounds gross to say that we don't always flush after simply urinating, but that's how severe our water shortage is.

The disposal of used tissues is not an issue in our house, however, because we have small rubbish bins alongside both toilets for things like tissues, empty toilet paper tubes, and other personal items of rubbish that shouldn't be flushed.

I have several friends that live out in the country without a piped water supply. We don't, as a rule, have wells in this area of the state, so they all have to transport their water in for the house by pick-up trucks with huge plastic tanks on the beds. Believe me, if I "flushed for a tissue" at one of their houses, I would be deprived of coffee since I just "used" my portion to fill the pot and more. Do NOT deprive me of my coffee , may the tissue float to it's hearts content! Sandy

EVERYTHING, whether important or trivial, gets discussed on Funtrivia eventually!

Seriously, I find it extremely interesting to note the differences between countries and cultures over simple everyday things like this, and the reasons behind what is done or not done in other places.

Everything we discuss - from the differences in our housing, our attitudes to water and hygiene, to our opinions on politics and world events - and the friendships we make here with people we've never met, is what makes this site so wonderful and so compelling.

Well I have to agree there mother goose - this site certainly does have some strange and eclectic topics of conversation - many of which I too find interesting, and many I find totally hilarious!

Then the Secretary General of the United Nations presumably would not be posting in a thread entitled "Bathroom Etiquette" at Funtrivia.com at the time.

Well you never know Sue!

I am sure he would have an opinion on it - and who knows, maybe one day, a matter of such importance may well find itself on the agenda at the United Nations.
Hey we might all become famous!
Funtrivia members quoted as being world authorities on the subject!

Well, I think the time has come to lock this thread. Most things that are going to be said on the subject of whether to put tissues down toilets , have been said by now. Thanks all.
