My sister is doing an assignment on Ancient Rome, and she is doing an A-Z thing.
She has asked me to ask on here if anyone can think of something for the letter U, and the letter X.

She would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help.

Thanks.

I found a site here about clothing worn by the ancient Romans and these were under U (sorry , they are a bit obscure!)
Udo (pl., udones): A woolen sock made from African goat's hair.

Umbo: A term used to designate the bunching of cloth pulled from the portion draped over the left side of the body over the sinus. It apparently helped to hold the garment in place; see Macrobius, Saturnalia 3.13.4. Tertullian (De pallio 5) used the term to designate the folded band of the banded toga of the third century A.D.).
Then there is this guy:
Ulysses

You could cheat a bit and do Roman numerals (e.g. X = 10).

Sara: Thanks a lot! She was really struggling for 'u'. She was thinking of saying something like 'umbrellas were not common'

Daniel: I don't know if she will be able to get away with that, but I will ask her.

Weren't there any famous Romans called Xavier or Xerxes or similar? or even a General from somewhere else that the Romans did battle with? (where does "the" Xerxes fit in anyone? my history is not all it should be lol)
Or the 10th Legion would be the "Xth"

"X" wasn't used as an initial letter in pure Latin. However, the Romans borrowed a few words from Greek which began with the Greek letter xi, and transliterated them with an initial x. These include

XYSTUS - a colonnade or portico, and

XENIUM - a gift or present given to a guest. The thirteenth book of Martial's Epigrams is called "Xenia" and consists of 127 couplets which are supposed to accompany various gifts of food and drink.

From my limited latin I thought the Romans treated U & V as the same letter (as well as I & J as in IOM as an acromym for Jupiter Optimum Maximus).

It isn't so much focusing on the language, as on the general society of Ancient Rome. I doubt the teacher even knows about what you mentioned tnrees

Thanks a lot Tabbytom. Those should really impress her teacher.

For the letter U, you might try various Praetors (magistrates) who were styled Praetor Urbanus, or research the office itself. The word urban speaks for itself. Some of them rose to high position and great influence. Praetor Urbanus was a very early magisterial office of the ancient republic.
Also, there was an early 3rd century Pope, Pope Urban. He reigned 222-30 A.D. Not much known about him, so might be worth some brownie points investigating.

Thanks Trojan, I should have posted though, she has handed up the assignment already. I believe she used Sara's amd Daniel's suggestions, as she couldn't be bothered waiting around for more.

Joza 1, If you had checked back before you posted , you would have seen that the help requested has already been given and the homework handed in. Also the information about Xerxes was already given earlier in the thread, as Agony pointed out.
