Try Enders Game by Orsan Scott Card.

Great story and the central characters are all young children.

What sort of books do you like to read? Fiction? Non-fiction? Classics? Modern? Biographies? Throw me a line here ;-).

If you like outer space stories, "Space Cadet" by Robert Heinlein.

I've been having the exact same problem lately; can't seem to find a good book!
Of course, for you I can make several reccomendations. Ever read the Giver, or The Outsiders? I've written several book reviews at my website, maybe you can find something that interests you there

Hmm ... you should try to grab Susan Kay's Phantom of the Opera. It's an amazing version of Gaston Leroux' novel from the beginning of the 20th century, and it really kicks butt. It's very well written and contains lots of details. Good stuff.

You should definetly read "The Talisman" by Stephen King and Peter Straub. Part two, "The Black House", was released last year, but of course couldn't measure up to the first (do they ever?). Another excellent book is "Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas", by Tom Robbins. Don't let the title throw you.

Anything by Steven King (except that "Atlantis" one!), John Grisham (not too sure about his newest one, though!), or Clive Cussler!

Lefois oh you are evil recommending Grisham!

Fiction i'd recommend Catch 22 or The Outsider by Albert Camus.
Real life stuff I'd go for Into the Wild by Jon Krakaeur

Sci-fi/ Fantasy Try some Tim Powers or Jack Vance.

Historical novels hmmm Mary Renault (i think)

That's just off the top of my head though.

I was just wondering....Why EVIL, quogequox?
I like Grisham books! Perhaps they're not classics, or anything! But I love 'em, all the same.
Do you still like me, quog???

I'm sorry to say you've slipped in my estimation, alas you must learn to live with that lefois. [Wink]

You know whats a great book though, and granted its for kids and a picture book but nonetheless. It's Where the Wild Things Are. By Maurice Sendak(i think). It is an absolute classic. The art work in it is eternal and stirs all those old memories of my long ago youth.

Ulysses isnt really a book to snuggle up with though. I had to read it once and it was a real slog but then i read it again a few years later at leisure and thought it was pretty good, but i'm not really big on Joyce.

I bagged Grisham cos he's just a formulaic writer pumping out the dollars with each click of the keyboard. Good for him but not really good reading.
When i was younger i read a lot of Alistair McClean and fredrick Forsyth and loved it. Then i did a literature course and they made us read more "literature" and after that you cant go back. I frequently cringe at some of the writing in the bestseller novels. I thought Tom Clancy may be different once but My God he was awful.
Some times I mourn those days just to be able to read a pageturner but bloody hell a well written one is damn near impossible to find.
And dont get me started on Sci fi or Fantasy. Sheesh!

April, I couldn't put down Thackeray's "Vanity Fair". For something less lighthearted try "Mayor of Casterbridge", "Tess" or "Jude" by Thomas Hardy.

Anything by Wodehouse, lightweight but very entertaining. Or try a biography of someone, Elizabeth I is always interesting to read about.

Hope you find something nice ;-)
