I was thinking 'violet' and just looked at the leaves but never even read the text accompanying the wiki photo. Today I realized that the violets in the yard here have leaves very different than those in the photos. Do I get half a prize for sort-of guessing right?

Here is a Whatsit that may or may not be a stumper:

It looks very sticky. Could it be fried dough?

Could also be wet and slimy. Do I see a tentacle? Is it part of a squid or octopus?

Love the little "ditties" for clues, Kapuskasing! I haven't made a guess, but I think after those clues, minkpenny is right with the fries.

Minkpenny wins!
And the prize is... a large bowl of fresh fruit salad. Runners-up each get a bunch of organically-grown carrots.

The photos on this website ( http://www.naturalnews.com/phototour_mystery_meat_1.html ) are what led me to take a closer look at a plate of french fries. Even with my cheap camera, the fries look disturbingly greasy and salty in close-up. But they sure tasted good!

Please note I am not at all endorsing the views expressed on the linked website, and if you really like lunchmeat you might not want to go to there. I just think the pictures are interesting.

p.s. thanks, Sandy!

Yay! I'm sure that bowl of fresh fruit salad would taste delicious!

Good job with the picture and the clues, Kapuskasing It was hard guessing what it was!

I'd say a lettuce leaf.

I agree about a lettuce leaf. It could also be cabbage.

Excellent guesses, all - it is indeed lettuce, this is called Red Batavian lettuce.

I do enjoy this thread even though I don't get to participate too often. How about trying to identify what exactly this is:
