I can never tell beforehand what will make me cry. It comes always unexpectedly. I always cry when I read "It" by Stephen King - the ending. I remember crying a little when I read "Pet Sematary", the part where Gage dies. And what's setting my tears loose is a certain passage in "The Neverending Story" - it's so sad when Artax dies...

I agree with Callybub, "Watership Down" immediately came to mind for me too and also by the same author, Richard Adams, the book "The Plague Dogs". This book's about two dogs who've escaped from an experimental lab, and in order to find the dogs and get them back, the lab tells the public that the dogs are carrying a dangerous disease. As usual Richard Adams tells the story from the animal's point of view. Another book series that made me cry was Jean Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear". I still need to read her latest installment.

"Night." It was a required reading for me, and I practically balled my eyes out. I NEVER, ever cry when reading a book, so this was a rare experience for me.

It was a detailed account of the author's experience during the holocaust. He refered to it as the "one long night." I still get nightmares, especially about the dead violinist. I couldn't bring myself to pick up my own violin for a day after reading that horrific story.

Ok, I'm not a big crier, but this year two books have brought me very close to it...and they were both John Irving...

...The only reason I didn't cry during "The World According to Garp" was because the guy who was living with me at the time kept barging into my room and asking me stupid questions when I got to the sad part...I eventually had to say to him "I just got to the sad part in the book, can it wait 5 minutes!!"

...and the reason I didn't cry when I was reading "A Prayer for Owen Meaney" was because I was on the tram on the way to work at the time...although I'm sure people could hear me sobbing, trying to stop myself from crying...

I cry at the happy parts of books. The one that affects me a lot (and I don't know why) is Rilla of Ingleside by LM Montgomerey, when Jem finally comes home and Dog Monday greets him after so many years. I just have to put the book down and sob.

Those books got me crying too, Bookworm. I totally agree. The end of Goodnight, Mr. Tom is a real tearjerker.

Here's one that makes me cry "The Velveteen Rabbit". After reading that I always feel so guilty about putting my old stuffed animals in a box in the basement.

"Paradise Alley" by Kevin Baker. Most of what happens in this book is true. The final scene in the book is tragic and sad (but really happened); it stayed with me for weeks. If you are interested in learning a little American history that is not widely known, or if you just want to read a great novel, I highly recommend this book.

I don`t cry but when I read Billy Budd but I did get a great sense of outrage at the ending .

Callybub is quite correct, "Watership Down" is a great deal more than a children's book about bunnies. It has an epic structure with its set piece battles and the mythological stories that are told within it. It's one I go back to again and again for comfort reading.

Mandelbrotset, thanks for mentioning "The Plague Dogs". I read that once and have never managed to read it again, it was far too harrowing. Brave important writing.

I had to read "Of Mice and Men" in high school. I remeber sitting at my mother's kitchen table and sobbing.

When I was reading "The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood" I cried and cried and told my husband I was glad he didn't die in the war.

And of course, "Flowers For Algernon".

I have to agree on "Watership Down" and "The Plague Dogs" by Richard Adams. Another author who makes me cry is Guy Gavriel Kay with "Fionavar Tapestry" and "Tigana". The sad parts are so sad that I NEVER read these books in public.

No book has ever made me cry like "Wuthering Heights." I cried and cried when I read it.

This is pretty childish, but the happy parts of the books always made me cry. Especially the Enid Blyton books which I read when I was about 5 or 6. Right now, the book Wuthuring Heights makes me cry the most.

some books I remember that made me cry:

Uncle Tom's Cabin - by Harriet Beacher Stowe. I read it for the first time when I was around 10 years old, and even though I know what happenes the book still makes me cry at the end (and where the little girl dies) when I read it again and it leaves me sad and miserable for the rest of the day so I haven't read it in a few years now.

other books - the end of harry potter 5 & 6

I have never cried from sorrow due to a book although, I have read on with a heavy heart many times. i did cry however from joy and relief when I read "Jonothan Livingston Seagull". I was a very troubled child and I first read it when I was 14 and I took great comfort from it. It really is a magical book and many people that I have taken a shine to in life also hold this story near to their hearts.

Obviously no one here has read a Love Story by Eric Segal. The opening line is "What can you say about a 25-year old girl that died?" Yet, one can not help crying when she finally does in the end.

I HAVE JUST A BOOK CALLED 'THE LITTLE PRISONER' ABOUT A YOUNG GIRL WHO WAS ABUSED BY HER STEPFATHER, BOTH PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY AND SEXUALLY. IT WAS A TRUE STORY BUT THE AUTHOR HAD TO CHANGE HER NAME COS OF REPROCUSSIONS FROM HER FAMILY. THEY HAD HER BEATEN UP. NOW THAT I READ IN TWO DAYS AND IT DID MAKE ME CRY. AS DID 'THE LONG ROAD HOME' BY DANIELLE STEEL. THAT WAS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE AS WELL.

Hi Violetdiva,
Just a short note to let you know that using all capital letters is considered "YELLING" and we dont do that at FT.
I am sure you didn't mean to do so but in the future please keep that in mind when posting anywhere on the site.

"The Circus Fire" by Stewart O'Nan. It's the true story of the Hartford Circus Fire in 1944 which killed 167 people. The stories of people being heroic in the most chaotic situation I can think of makes my heart swell and break at the same time. I definitely recommend it.

SPOILER ALERT!

One that got to me was the last book in the Honor Harrington series by David Weber, "At All Costs" (book #11). Towards the end of the book he kills off Alistair McKeon, who has been a main charicter from the very first book. What's worse, he lets you think that he survived the battle, so you're all relieved, then wham you are hit with the fact that he's dead. But what really gets you is at the very end where Honor is reading to the kids from "David and the Pheonix" and likens Alistair to the pheonix. *tear, tear -sniff*
