Okay, so I'm a guy and I cry over books and movies. I'm also over 6 foot and 200 pounds, so don't tease me about it or I'll break your face. Any book by Betty Smith - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Maggie Now, Joy in the Morning - they all get to me. That woman was such a marvelous writer. It's a shame she isn't remembered or read by many people nowadays.

I agree with James Herriot's special chapters--especially his story about the Christmas Kitten--a heartfelt story about a very independent mother cat dying of cancer who brings her waif of a kitten to the only woman who has ever befriended her. I weep every time I read that story. Having competed in prose reading in high school I always thought that that would have been a perfect story to "read" but I knew I could never do it without embarrassing myself and breaking down.

Also, Death Be Not Proud, a true story of how a young teen and his family courageously handle the challenge of facing his death from cancer. This was a book that was eventually made into a movie that Robbie Benson admirably (in my opinion) portrayed the son. Yep, you're right--it's an oldie.

'Mrs. Mike', by Benedict and Nancy Freeman.
It's a truew story about a young girl who marries an RCMP officer, back when Canada was very young, and their lives and tribulations in and around the Hudson Bay area, miles from civilization.
When the cholera epidemic sweeps through the area the story becomes heart-wrenching.

I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't read it, but there's some really quite emotional stuff in there (or maybe im just soppy)
It's always a bit annoying when a book makes me cry because i can't read and cry at the same time!lol

"Tess of the D'Urbervilles" by Thomas Hardy. The part where Tess baptizes her baby right before it dies and names him Sorrow. I had to put the book down at that point, the tears were really flowing.

My Sister's Keeper- Jodi Piccoult. My brother thought something was wrong with me because most normal people don't cry over spring break for no apoparant reason. It's an amazing book though, highly highly highly recommended to anyone.

I admit I am a cry baby, in terms of books, movies, and even television series.
There's no author or book in particular, when the book/movie tackles about goodbyes, dying, geez,.. my heart melts and i cried. at the moment I am reading Teusdays with Morrie and again, the book made me cry.

Last Letter From Stalingrad: letters home from German troops surrounded at Stalingrad that got out on the last plane before their surrendor. Fewer than one in ten who were released ever came back from Stalin's prison camps.

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

If our leaders read these two books before making decisions to go to war they'd learn much better how to resolve problems without violence.

Last time a book really affected me, was the newest Harry Potter book - book 6 - although book 5 made me even more upset!

I cry buckets every time I read the chapter in 'Anne of Green Gables' when Matthew dies. And 'How Green Was My Valley' by Richard Llewelyn brings on waves of hiraeth...and tears when Dada dies.

Other books that affected my waterworks:
'Black Beauty' by Anna Sewell - in fact, any story in which animals are mistreated or die. (I'm such a wuss!)
'London Belongs to Me' by Norman Collins
'The Diary of Anna Frank'

Poetry affects me that way, too! Especially some of T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, A.E. Housman, Rupert Brooke....

Cymruambyth, that part of "Anne of Greent Gables" is very sad.
I tend to cry alot, even if the book sad. I just get so attatched to the characters, that I hate leaving them, I guess. So let's see
"The Giver"
"Gathering Blue"
"Messenger"
"A Long Way From Chicago" at the end, when the grandma is waving.
"A Ring of Endless Light"
"Many Waters"
"East"
"This Lullaby"
"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader " The whole end of that book is just sad.
"Land of the Buffalo Bones" That's one of those Dear America books. The part when her friend leaves really upset me.
"Return of the King" I think alot of people cry at the end of that book.
And also, when Thorin dies in "The Hobbit" made me cry, and I was reading that in the middle of Lit. class. Very embarassing.
Yeah, I guess most of those I cried even when they weren't sad just because I liked the book, and didn't want it to end.

I've read Tuesdays with Morrie twice, and I cried both times.

Tuesdays with Morrie was a fantastic book, very sad indeed. Also Elephant Song by Wilbur Smith is a good tear jerker.

I cried for the "Order of the Phoenix" when a particular character that I had grown attatched to died. In the "Half-Blood Prince", I don't remember crying when another dear character bit the dust - I guess I was too much in shock to cry. Another book that brought a tear or two to my eye was my Physics text book, when I was studying the night before the exam.

I can very much relate to you there! The Notebook really got to me. Not only the book, but also the movie. I cry at sad parts/funny parts/where they tell each other they love each other/when they make up, so yes... i pretty much cry throughout the entire book!

"Old Yeller" was a tearjerker. Books that animals die in are usually the ones that get me teary eyed.

I have to agree with you whole heartedly. When Jem gets off that train and Dog Monday greets him I just go to pieces. I actually haven't read that book in a long time because I know it is going to make me cry. (Rilla of Ingelside)

I also cry when I read Anne of Green Gables I cry when Matthew dies. That dear dear old man.

A lot of the Anne books get me close to tears but those two always get a reaction.

I also cried at the end of Mistress of the Empire when Mara sees her ex again with his new wife and twins and she sees Kevin again for the first time in many years.

Turns out I am an old softy.

I agree, "Anne of Green Gables" was sad, but I think that that is part of what makes it such a good book. It would seem too much like a fairy tale story if there weren’t any sadness in it to make it realistic.

There are so many books that made/make me cry when reading them. Sometimes i cry happy tears but most times i cry when it's about children or animals - those are always sure tear-triggers .
But my #1 crying book is "The Little Prince" - which is also 1st place in my Top any books. Just to check again....I took it from my bedpost and opened it to read the ending phrases:

"Wait for a time, exactly under the star. Then, if a little man appears who laughs, who has golden hair and who refuses to answer questions, you will know who he is. If this should happen, please comfort me. Send me word that he has come back."

Yes, it never fails, i am crying right now...

Have you ever read "The Velveteen Rabbit"? That book has always made me cry ever since I was 8years old! I wished all my toys were the rabbit...

"I'll Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch - my kids used to pick this one for their bedtime story when they wanted to see me cry!
Actually I was just thinking about this book the other night, after I heard that my son's friend had died. I wanted to wrap my arms around him and read it to him again.
