Well, I'm certainly familiar with St. George, and I did know that there was such a thing as St. George's Day, but I've never thought to ask: what exactly do you British do to celebrate? Slay a dragon or two?

Happy Saint George's day to all! I don't know about anywhere else, but my area of England doesn't seem to be making a big deal of it. We seem to enjoy celebrating St Patrick's Day and then more or less ignore our own saint day

At least the St George flag has been flying from the church today and we are going out for a St George's day dinner this evening... so not forgotten in this part of the world.

Would be nice to have it as a bank holiday, but then we would need to have all three UK saints day's off as well.

Dragon-Slaying Patron Saint of England

One of the best-known stories about Saint George is his fight with a dragon. But it is highly unlikely that he ever fought a dragon, and even more unlikely that he ever actually visited England. Despite this, St George is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England.

St George was a Roman soldier - so perhaps we should all eat pizza today.

Does anyone care? I think not. I can see three bare flagpoles from my window, including the church. I can remember going on St. George's Day Parade when I was in the Brownies. Somewhere I have an England flag. I think the last time it saw daylight was for Euro 2004....

Actually, I am quite ashamed of this. I do think we should celebrate our patron saint.

So, no one throws dragon-slaying parties for St. George's Day? How disappointing! I thought perhaps you all chased lizards around your gardens.;)

Sherry75, if you're going to celebrate St. George with pizza, make it pizza bianca. No tomatoes back there in the Roman Empire, alas.

We also celebrate St. George's Day today, not related to England , but as a saint/name day. We offer good wishes and gifts to those bearing the name of "George" (or any variation of it).

Thanks L - will bear that in mind. Actually was all olde Englishe fare - roast beef and all the trimmings.

I know it is past the date now - but the link shows some of the events which took place over the week - so not quite so dead and buried as some would have us believe.
