Any good ideas about how to get smell of like perfume out of things- magazinnes, the mail, anything it comes in and gets all over. Then gives me so bad allergies- hives and so much worse. Everytime it comes in a magazine I get my mom rips it out, but it still seems to stay around with smelling like perfume for a long time. I guess it must be getting on the pages next to it somehow.

Same as with smell of smoke or other chemicals that get on things too. Like stuffed animals. They cause me the same problems too- hives and stuff. Just got this big cute stuffed bear for my birthday a friend sent me that has the scent of smoke or something on it.

Seal it in a big plastic bag, with a lot of wadded up newspaper. Replace the newspaper every day until the smell is gone. This is a fair amount of trouble, so I'd only bother with things I actually wanted to keep. I'd just read the magazines outside.

I contacted customer service for the magazines I received that had perfume or cologne offers. I informed them of allergies and they sent magazines without the scented stuff. Just a thought.

Weather permitting, if you can put your toys or magazines, or whatever is smelly, outside in the Sunshine for a few hours, that often does the trick.
Fresh Air is good for a lot of things!

That was a clever talentedone. What a good idea.

Stuffed toys can also be washed in the washing machine and hung outside to dry.

There is also an amazing product on the market called Fabreze (made by P & G) which removes odours without washing.

Baking soda is a great product to remove odours, as well as many other uses. (I keep an opened box in my fridge to keep it smelling fresh.) Just put the item in a plastic bag, and an opened box of soda, in a day or two it should be odour-free. When your box of baking soda has done it's job, pour it down the sink followed by a cup of vinegar, this will clean out the pipes. Baking soda mixed with a little water or vinegar is also good for cleaning counters and stainless steel and it's non-toxic.

Yes, baking soda is great stuff, Mags! I could have written your post, I do all the same things with it. I really like using it in the kitchen for cleaning when I have the grandkids around because most of the disenfectant cleaners/wipes are toxic and you need to make sure you re-wipe everything really well after using them. I used to put a small plastic container, with holes puched in the top, of baking soda in my son's shoes for basketball, baseball, etc. to get the *stink* out. The shoes were expensive and I didn't want to constantly break them down by washing them.

It certainly is, jordandog! Great tip about the shoes too. When I had my two ol' whippets, I would from time to time sprinkle baking soda over the carpets and leave it overnight, then vacuum it in the morning to get rid of that 'doggy' smell. Works wonders!

Lady, Febreze does work well, however if you have small children or pets you might want to think twice about using it, especially on floors. It has something toxic in it that can actually be lethal to pets. They get it on their feet, then lick them...

Oh I did not know that Mags. Luckily I dont have carpets so would not use it on the floors.

My brother-in-law had a back op and had to wear a brace 24/7 for a couple of months. He used Fabreze on it as he could not stand the smell. None of us could smell it but it drove him nuts.
